The Drovers Street Band: HKB FiNN: Vocals, Bass & Percussion, Derek Johson: Electric & Acoustic Guitars, Tunde Jegede: Pizzicato Cello & Kora (21 String Harp Lute from Mali) Folasade on vocals, Don Jose on Drums...
Influences: As a group, our influences are: Son House, The whole Jamaican sound from 1959 until 1984, Toumani Diabate, Caron Wheeler, Egberto Gismonti, S.E. Rogie, Black Uhuru (Anthem was serious album) and The Wailers.
For Derek Johnson, my biggest influences are from places like Madagascar, Laos (Thailand), South Africa, Bolivia (the folk tradition), South Sea islands and the music of great American artists like Miles Davis, Earth, Wind & Fire, David Sanscious, Herbie Hancock, Donny Hathaway, Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell & Count Basie. Also UK artists such as Aswad, Steel Pulse and Blacksmith.
For HKB FiNN, my influences are: Ben Harper, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Ben Folds, Mos Def, Dennis Brown, Bernard Wright, Hi-Tek, Kodo, Pete Rock, Dizzy Gillespie, Kelis, Sa-Ra, The Roots, Papa M, Pernice Brothers, The Meters, Cleveland Watkiss, Peter Tosh, R.E.M. (adventures in Hi Fi album), Marcus Miller, Ryuchi Sakamoto and Bob Marley.
Sounds Like: Lead Belly playing with Robert Johnson in a compound in Mali with Guru and The Heptones on the mic making you laugh and cry in equal measure
