About Me

..
"If nothing is real, then nothing is left."
I'm so misunderstood, it's true, but I DO NOT care. I see too much, hear too much, feel too much, taste too much, smell too much and touch not nearly enough. It's my lot.
Ummm wait, correction. One cannot see, hear, feel, et al too deep and too much--what was I thinking?
After all, what you think of me is none of my business.
Of all of the possible methods of interaction that can happen between two people, friendship is by far the most basic and important, for without it, nothing else is possible. I must remember this, always.
I am the founder of the punk rock band "Butt Trumpet" and after quite a bit of soul-searching, I have come full circle and decided to continue the project. I'm not done yet, and believe me, over the years I have felt that part of my expression missing. There is much more left to do. Thus, it shall be done. Now.
I am also the "Thom" that wrote for and was deeply involved in the infamous Flipside Fanzine for many years. I also helped edit it, among other things...
Faith is my fuel.
Oh, I'm also a fully certified Seichim Reiki Master and a fully ordained Minister, heh.
I'm also a guy that DOES music.... I am not a "musician."
Big difference, I think.

Oh, and...,
Congratulations, Thom!
Your IQ score is 144
This number is based on a scientific formula that compares how many questions you answered correctly on the Classic IQ Test relative to others.
Your Intellectual Type is Visionary Philosopher. This means you are highly intelligent and have a powerful mix of skills and insight that can be applied in a variety of different ways. Like Plato, your exceptional math and verbal skills make you very adept at explaining things to others and at anticipating and predicting patterns. And that's just some of what we know about you from your IQ results.
The way you think about things makes you a Complex Intellectual. This means you are highly intelligent and have extraordinarily strong verbal and math skills. Compared to others you are a highly conceptual and complex thinker and are able to understand information in an abstract form. You also show great attention to detail. In fact, it's hard to find something you're not good at.
How did we determine that your thinking style is that of a Complex Intellectual? When we examined your test results further, we analyzed how you scored on 8 dimensions of intelligence: spatial, organizational, abstract reasoning, logical, mechanical, verbal, visual and numerical. The 3 dimensions you scored highest on combine to make you a Complex Intellectual. Only 1 out of 1,000 people have this rare combination of abilities.
Oh, and I burned then threw away my Mensa card because I thought that they were too stupid. True story.
"The measure of success is not whether you have a tough problem to deal with, but whether it's the same problem you had at the same time last year."
-- John Foster Dulles
"Computers are useless. They can only give you answers."
-- Pablo Picasso
"Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart... Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens."
-- Carl Jung
"The sage is not mindful for himself, but is receptive to others' needs. Knowing that virtue requires great faith, he has that faith, and is good to all; irrespective of others' deeds, he treats them according to their needs. He has humility and is shy, thus confusing other men. They see him as they might a child, and sometimes listen to his words."
-- From the Tao Te Ching
"A smooth sea never made a skilled mariner."
-- English proverb
"There can be no knowledge without emotion. We may be aware of a truth, yet until we have felt its force, it is not ours. To the cognition of the brain must be added the experience of the soul."
-- Arnold Bennett (1867-1931)
"Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius."
-- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
"True friendship starts the moment one person says to another, 'What? You too? I thought I was the only one!"
-- Unknown
"Any real change implies the breakup of the world as one has always known it, the loss of all that gave one identity, and the end of safety. It is only when one is able, without bitterness or self-pity, to surrender a dream one has long cherished, or a privilege one has long possessed, that one has set oneself free for higher dreams, for greater privileges."
-- James Baldwin
"At the center of the Universe is a loving heart that continues to beat and that wants the best for every person. Anything that we can do to help foster the intellect and spirit and emotional growth of our fellow human beings, that is our job. Those of us who have this particular vision must continue against all odds. Life is for service."
...and, another one:
"What makes the difference between wishing and realizing our wishes? Lots of things, and it may take months or years for a wish to come true, but it's far more likely to happen when you care so much about a wish that you'll do all you can to make it happen."
-- Fred Rogers (a.k.a., "Mister Rogers") 1928-2003
"To put the world right in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order; to put the family in order, we must first cultivate our personal life; we must first set our hearts right."
-- Confucius
"The American fascist would prefer not to use violence. His method is to poison the channels of public information. With a fascist the problem is never how best to present the truth to the public but how best to use the news to deceive the public."
-- Former VP Wallace, 1944
"To listen fully means to pay close attention to what is being said beneath the words. You listen not only to the 'music,' but to the essence of the person speaking. You listen not only for what someone knows, but for what he or she is.
"Ears operate at the speed of sound, which is far slower than the speed of light the eyes take in. Generative listening is the art of developing deeper silences in yourself, so you can slow our mind's hearing to your ears.. it is in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
-- Marianne Williamson, A Return to Love
"You can get much farther with a kind word and a gun than with a kind word alone."
-- Al Capone
"What makes people violent is the complacency of the status quo in a world that's destroying itself."
-- Wendy O. Williams
"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."
-- John Fitzgerald Kennedy
"As long as you can find someone else to blame for anything you are doing, you cannot be held accountable or responsible for your growth or the lack of it."
-- Sun Bear
THE ESSENTIAL ALAN WATTS
On NOTHINGNESS
"The idea of nothing has bugged people for centuries, especially in the Western world. We have a saying in Latin, Ex nihilo nuhil fit, which means "out of nothing comes nothing." It has occurred to me that this is a fallacy of tremendous proportions. It lies at the root of all our common sense, not only in the West, but in many parts of the East as well. It manifests in a kind of terror of nothing, a put-down on nothing, and a put-down on everything associated with nothing, such as sleep, passivity, rest, and even the feminine principles. But to me nothing -- the negative, the empty -- is exceedingly powerful. I would say, on the contrary, you can't have something without nothing.
"Image nothing but space, going on and on, with nothing in it forever. But there you are imagining it, and you are something in it. The whole idea of there being only space, and nothing else at all, is not only inconceivable but perfectly meaningless, because we always know what we mean by contrast.
On FAITH
"Faith is a state of openness or trust. To have faith is like when you trust yourself to the water. You don't grab hold of the water when you swim, because if you do you will become stiff and tight in the water, and sink. You have to relax, and the attitude of faith is the very opposite of clinging, and holding on. In other words, a person who is fanatic in matters of religion, and clings to certain ideas about the nature of God and the universe becomes a person who has no faith at all. Instead they are holding tight. But the attitude of faith is to let go, and become open to truth, whatever it might turn out to be.
On GOD
"The difficulty for most of us in the modern world is that the old-fashioned idea of God has become incredible or implausible. When we look through our telescopes and microscopes, or when we just look at nature, we have a problem. Somehow the idea of God we get from the holy scriptures doesn't seem to fit the world around us, just as you wouldn't ascribe a composition by Stravinsky to Bach. The style of God venerated in the church, mosque, or synagogue seems completely different from the style of the natural universe. It's hard to conceive of the author of the other.
On EGO
"I find that the sensation of myself as an ego inside a bag of skin is really a hallucination. What we really are is, first of all, the whole of our body. And although our bodies are bounded with skin, and we can differentiate between outside and inside, they cannot exist except in a certain kind of natural environment. Obviously a body requires air, and the air must within a certain temperature range. The body also requires certain kinds of nutrition. So in order to occur the body must be on a mild and nutriative planet with just enough oxygen in the atmosphere spinning regularly around in a harmonious and rythmical way near a certain kind of warm star.
"That arrangement is just as essential to the existence of my body as my heart, my lungs, and my brain. So to describe myself in a scientific way, I must also describe my surroundings, which is a clumsy way getting around to the realization that you are the entire universe. However, we do not normally feel that way because we have constructed in thought an abstract idea of our self.
On SELF
"Underneath the superficial self, which pays attention to this and that, there is another self more really us than I. And the more you become aware of the unknown self -- if you become aware of it -- the more you realize that it is inseparably connected with everything else that is. You are a function of this total galaxy, bounded by the Milky Way, and this galaxy is a function of all other galaxies. You are that vast thing that you see far, far off with great telescopes. You look and look, and one day you are going to wake up and say, "Why, that's me!" And in knowing that, you know that you never die. You are the eternal thing that comes and goes, that appears -- now as John Jones, now as Mary Smith, now as Betty Brown -- and so it goes, forever and ever and ever."
-- Alan Watts
"We must be the change we wish to see in the world."
-- Ghandi
"People would rather be wrong than be different."
-- Henry Jacobsen
"The most wasted of all days is one without laughter."
-- e.e. cummings
"The place where your greatest fears live is also the place where your greatest growth lies. Why would you ever run away from that?"
-- Robin Sharma
"If American democracy ceases to move forward as a living force, seeking day and night by peaceful means to better the lot of our citizens, fascism will grow in strength in our land."
-- Franklin Roosevelt, November 4, 1938
"There has grown up in the minds of certain groups in this country the notion that because a man or corporation has made a profit out of the public for a number of years, the government and the courts are charged with the duty of guaranteeing such profit in the future, even in the face of changing circumstances and contrary to public interest. This strange doctrine is not supported by statute or common law. Neither individuals nor corporations have any right to come into court and ask that the clock of history be stopped, or turned back."
-- RAH, Life Line, 1939
"It is proof of a base and low mind for one to wish to think with the masses or majority, merely because the majority is the majority. Truth does not change because it is, or is not, believed by a majority of the people."
-- Giordano Bruno
"Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds. The mediocre mind is incapable of understanding the man who refuses to bow blindly to conventional prejudices and chooses instead to express his opinions courageously and honestly."
-- Albert Einstein, quoted in New York Times, March 13, 1940
"Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions." -- Albert Einstein "First, they ignore you.
Then they laugh at you.
Then they fight you.
Then you win."
-- Ghandi
"A right that can be lost or removed simply because it is inconvenient to some group or organization isn't really a right. The problem is that many of our long-established "rights" are in the process of, or have already been, redefined as privileges. And privileges can be revoked. The fact that such redefinition is illegal under the Constitution doesn't seem to bother too many people in our various governments, which is troublesome. Doesn't seem to bother many of us ordinary citizens either, which I find even more disturbing."
And another...
"One cannot make fine wine in a microwave."
As well as this one...
"The rare payoffs come only by taking the rare risks." -- Me
and finally...
"Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."
-- Dorothy, "The Wizard of Oz" [1939]

...so quit askin' ;)

I love music so much that it's simply impossible to make some sort of list of bands because I just know I'll spend the rest of my life editing it. Suffice it to say, I am attracted to anything that is honest, human and from the heart. I could give two shits what style or genre it is. I tend to gravitate towards punk rock however.

Currently listening to: Dirty Three, Tindersticks, Velvet Underground (as usual), Ramones, Jimi Hendrix, Guitar Wolf , Rasputina, Butt Trumpet (I'm so vain!), some meditation stuff and I'm extremely hooked on The Fall (and always will be). I fukkin' HATE EMO, what a joke that crap is.

I also continue to work on evolving my project, Butt Trumpet , in different ways...

Coolest band I've found on myspace thus far? Why, that would have to be APE FIGHT ! And POINGLY as well! Also, I stumbled across THE CRACKDOWN and was quite impressed!

And THEN, I saw GOD in the form of THE MUTAYTOR !! Amazing, incredible live experience, wow!

You MUST check out THE MISSISSIPPI ALLIGATORS NOW! Holy shit, punk at it's very ROOTS: blues. AMAZING.

Movies:

FreakShow Deluxe - THE GREATEST SHOW UNEARTHED

FreakShow Deluxe presents highlights from THE GREATEST SHOW UNEARTHED, the full-length Sideshow Opera produced with the band Creature Feature at Safari Sam's nightclub in Hollywood, CA February 11, 2007. This show features sideshow stunts, live music & burlesque.I produced the edited the video... so have a looksee! Also, Ghoulia appears throughout this and well, you better know who she is! heh ;) My cinematic tastes are so wide-ranging that, like for music, I'd spend the rest of my life updating a list. Basically though, I really like the eclectic, offbeat or brutally honest stuff. OR, the movie that is SO awful it's good again. Cult classics, B-movies, porn that tries to have a plot behind it (ha!), westerns, horror, John Waters-type stuff, etc.

Television:

I don't watch much TV, other than maybe Discover or whatever, but holy fuck do I love the Trailer Park Boys! Oh and Animal Precinct. Love that too, yup. The Office (UK version not the shit American version) is pretty fucking cool too. And the new Doctor Who? Well, I'm a RABID fan! Also old Doctor Who, anything Doctor Who. I fucking love Doctor Who. Did I mention Doctor Who? ;)

Books:

I have an insatiable appetite for nonfiction of almost any type. I even like to read technical, physics and philosophy books because I am fascinated and want to learn what most people are satisfied being forever ignorant about. Currently reading: "The Outsider" by Colin Wilson, "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser, "T.A.Z." by Hakim Bey, "MAP" by Machaelle Small Wright (and I'm back to some Alan Watts again too as a refresher).

Heroes:

My only true hero doesn't yet exist. I believe that we need to work hard on ourselves and become our own hero--or better yet, somebody else's.
