About Me

CAPOEIRA FAMILY was founded 2003 by JUANITO "CANARIO" HELDMANN, who is also the bandleader of KARIBA or JUANITO'S KARIBA ALL STARS and a capoeirista. Juanito started learning Capoeira back in 1983 with MESTRE GATO II (Sinesio Goes), the son of famous MESTRE GATO from Bahia. 1984 Juanito organized the first workshop in Munich for a brazilian Capoeiramaster, which was MESTRE ACORDEON (Bira Almeida). During this event Juanito was babtized by MESTRE ACORDEON who gave him the name CANARIO. 1986 Juanito went to Salvador Bahia to train at the old school of famous MESTRE BIMBA. 2006 Juanito was invited by MESTRE ACORDEON and MESTRA SUELLY. So he went with his daughter Aisha to stay at their home in Richmond and to train at their school, the CAPOEIRA ARTS CAFE in Berkeley. Juanito is still practizing Capoeira at the school of his friend MARTINHO FIUZA called CAPOEIRA CONTEMPORANA.
