American by birth and nationality, Nigerian by ancestry, European citizen by choice (Milan for 5 years, now Munich).
Singing has always been a part of Titilayo's life, ever since she sang her first solo in church at the age of 2, but she never thought of music as a career. Together with her older sister, she was planning on a career in law. But one thing led to another and, while in college, she was "discovered" and offered a scholarship to change from pre-law to music. She took the scholarship mainly because she needed the money, but still didn't really entertain the possibility of singing as a career. So she played it safe and four years later, graduated with a double major in English Literature and music (voice). Ironically though, by then, she could no longer imagine a career in anything BUT music! The rest, as they say, is history.
Even though her formal music education is classical, she never stopped singing the styles of music that influenced her from her youth...jazz, blues, folk, Musicals, gospel, church hymns in English and in Yoruba... She would study at the Music Conservatory during the day and sing in dinner theaters and with big bands at night. She has worked with some very talented people and some of her idols in Opera, Musicals and Jazz over the years (including Franco Zeffirelli, Renata Scotto, Tommy Tune, the late Adolph Green and Betty Comden, Giorgio Gaslini.....), and her love of all these different styles have helped her create her own "space", her own unique musical style and expression. She feels very lucky and blessed that she can channel her emotions and energy into something so creative, yet personal, share it with others and get to call it "work"!
Over the years, she has been asked many times to change her name to something easier to pronounce and remember, but she always said that she couldn't see herself being called by any other name besides Titilayo, which means "joy is forever". "It's only important that people remember the music, that it has something to say to them."
