This initiative is the Bay Area program of a three year partnership between the Walt Disney Company and the Points of Light Foundation/Volunteer Center National Network. The Green Challenge 07-09 will help improve the environment, help combat global warming through dynamic individual and group volunteer activities to help keep the Bay Area's air, water and vegetation healthy.
Green Challenge Official Launch-July 7, 2007:
Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge & Environmental Education Center
Volunteers eradicated invasive weeds in 12 acres of upland habitat located adjacent to the Environmental Education Center. Two acres of this land consists of native butterfly and songbird gardens filled with a variety of California native plants that were planted by volunteers.
Save the Bay at Eden Landing Ecological ReserveThis event offered volunteers a great chance to participate in and learn about the South Bay Salt Pond restoration work. Volunteers cleaned up trash and removed non-native plants such as fennel and mustard.
San Francisquito Watershed Council and Baylands Preserve.
Volunteers participated in a creek cleanup on San Francisquito Creek along Woodland Rd. between Manhattan Ave. and Newell Rd. They removed debris from the creek bed and creek bank to help preserve the area.
Save The Bay at Palo Alto BaylandsIn partnership with Save The Bay and the Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve, volunteers removed non-native plants from the marsh, which will allow native plants to thrive and restore and protect this wildlife habitat.
November 17, 2007: End of the year celebration ties in with National Family Volunteer Day. A day of music, food and family-oriented fun will culminate with an awards ceremony recognizing Green Challenge volunteers.
