About Me

Ebony deftly and passionately incorporates her legendary -
"360 degrees" of World African Music
which runs the gamut of Jazz, Blues, R&B and Gospel.

Ebony's legions of fans burgeoned out of her four year musical residency at the legendary Sweetwater's Cabaret on Amsterdam Avenue in New York City.

She originally served as Musical Director/Vocal Arranger for the James DeJongh American Place Theatre production of -
DO LORD REMEMBER ME
as well as for the 20th Anniversary National Black Theatre Festival production.

Ebony sang the role of Ar in Noa Ain's -
THE OUTCAST
at both The Majestic Theater in the Opera Ebony and the New Jersey State Opera productions.

Ebony Jo-Ann collaborated with South African writers Duma Ndlovu and Mbongeni Ngema to write the Crossroads Theatre Company's production of -
SHEILA'S DAY
She also wrote its vocal arrangements. She was vocal arranger for The Goodman Theatre in Chicago and for the Manhattan Theatre Club Broadway run of -
DROWNING CROW
She has graced such stages as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, BB Kings, Kennedy Center, The Copa Cabana in New York and Nigeria and many other stellar venues around the world.

Recordings include -

written by Joseph James, arranged by Randy Wilson.

She performs the title track of -
THEN I'LL BE FREE TO TRAVEL HOME
The two-part documentary that chronicles the story of the African Burial Grounds in New York City.

is most recently seen in the role of Cookie in the Negro Ensemble Company's production of Samm-Art William's The Waiting Room and the Broadway run of August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean . She is a Helen Hayes Award nominee for the True Colors Theatre Company's production of Langston Hughes' Tambourines To Glory .

Jo-Ann has also appeared in the Broadway productions of Drowning Crow at the Biltmore Theatre and The Sunshine Boys with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall, Sheila's Day , (co-author), the original and the 2003 revival of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom , and Mule Bone , as well as the off-Broadway productions of Crowns , at the Second Stage Theatre, Inacent Black and Do Lord Remember Me . Her regional credits include the Equity tour of If This Hat Could Talk , in the role of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, Javon Johnson's Sanctified at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in the Southern Writers' Project. Regina Taylor's Crowns at the McCarter Theatre and Drowning Crow at the Goodman Theatre, Waiting To Be Invited (ACT Theatre/Seattle and the Denver Center Theatre), The Trial of One Short-Sighted Black Woman vs Mammy Louise and Safreeta Mae , Heaven And The Homeboy , Spunk , From the Mississippi Delta , Lost In The Stars , Bubblin' Brown Sugar , and Fame: The Musical . She has been in the national and international tours of The Wiz with Stephanie Mills, Satchmo , Apollo: It Was Just Like Magic , and Sheila's Day , in Toronto, Ontario and Grahamstown, South Africa.

Ebony most recently completed two upcoming films; Noise , and Jumper . Also two pilots; NY-70 / NBC-TV and The Prince /WB-TV, The Jury , as well as, Law & Order SVU , 100 Centre Street , the PBS American Authors Series and the Campbell's Chunky Soup campaign with the NFL standout Terrell Davis. She is also featured in the hit films, Kate & Leopold , Marci X and The Orphan King . Other films include Pootie Tang with Chris Rock, Eddie with Whoopi Goldberg, The Day The Ponies Came Back , The Other Brother , The Stand-In , Charlie Hoboken , Fly By Night , Dark Waters , Chain of Desires and Frederick Douglass: An American Life . Other television credits include New York Undercover, Law & Order, Outreach (pilot), The New York News, and One Life To Live.

Ebony is the proud recipient of six Vivian Robinson AUDELCO Awards for Bessie Smith: Empress of the Blues , Black Nativity , Cotton Club Magic , Do Lord Remember Me , The Trial Of One Short-Sighted Black Woman vs Mammy Louise and Safreeta Mae and Crowns .
