About Me

Maja Jaku ( Jakupovic ) was born on 24th October 1971 in Kosovska Mitrovica ( SRB ). Her childhood was influenced by her musical family. In this way, her father, Ljuba Jakupovic, was a Jazz trumpeter, her grandfather an opera singer and her uncle a Funk bassist. This surrounding has proved inspiring for her as an artist. As a young child she already performed at children’s festivals which were broadcasted live on TV. At the age of fourteen she founded her first band, gained experience on the stage and won several prizes in former Yugoslavia. Four years later she decided to go to Graz in order to study Jazz singing. She managed to pass the entrance exam at the University of Music in Graz and started studying in the classes of Mark Murphy, Andy Bey, Sheila Jordan und Jay Clayton. When she joined Gerd Schuller’s Band “Attack“, she started to perform at many Jazz Festivals. I learned how to deal with the big stage...”- Maja reports In 1997, she founded her own band together with the Croatian pianist Sascha Mutic: the Maja Jaku Band. Today the two musicians are married and have a son called Viktor. ”Working with Sascha means being very creative. He is relaxed, patient but also precise and critical. Above all, he taught me how to think as a band leader and not only as a singer.” Maju Jaku performed in projects, concerts and jam sessions with Andy Bey, Barry Harris, Peter Mihelic, Steve Gut, Resha Revishin, Darko Stonajkovski, Johnathan Blake, Howard Curtis, Fritz Pauer, Karl-Heinz Miklin, Ewald Oberleitner, Erich Bachträgl, Alex Deutsch, Andre Jeanquartier, Jure Pukl, Milan Nikolic, Dusan Novakov, Andjelko Stupar, Sava Miletic, Renato Chicco, Predrag Peric, Sava Medan, Martin Wöss, Werner Radzik, Dragan Tabakovic, Fernando Corea, Nenad Vasilic, Dennis Irvin, Oliver Kent, Brad Lily, Klaus Raible, Dejan “Munja” Cosic, Dusan Simovic, Mario Vavti, Lubos Sramek, Robert Jukic, Martin Harms, Jörg Haberl, Uli Renert, Peter Kunsek, Thorsten Zimmerman, Viktor Palic, Wolfram, Derschmidt, Wolfram Abt, Kolja Gjoni, Walter Rath, Vladimir Kostadinovic, Jaka Kopac, David Jarh, Vlada Krnetic and many more. Sounds Like: JAZZZEIT_AUSTRIA:Maja Jaku will forge ahead. Sasa Mutic is her pianist and the man on her side who tailors perfect songs to her; songs that are full of Soul and Jazz. The high level of Maja’s singing is also revealed in songs such as “My shinging hour” and in Wonder/Wrights “Lately”. This “Message” is easily conveyed to people who enjoy listening to Sade, Working Week and, as a masculine counterpart, Al Jarreau. The Band, Sasa Mutic and the guest musicians Jure Pukl (saxophonist) and Vanja Kevresan (guitarist), is geared to Maja Jaku’s singing and play a fantastic instrumental accompaniment. It is a pity that the CD only lasts forty minutes. However, quality is better than quantity. (BAK)KULTURWOCHE_AUSTRIA:Even if your heart and ears are not longing for another Jazz singer – the CD of Maja Jaku should be warmly recommended to you nevertheless. Lost my country, lost my friends, but I never loose my Blues; Maja sings, or in other words, celebrates these words passionately. Maja Jaku, who was born in Kosovo and lives in Graz now, has already met with success as a Musical singer at the opera in Graz. However, her true passion belongs to the interpretation of Blues and Jazz. Maja is a singer who not only convinces with a perfect singing technique, but also perfects her songs with soul and heart without appearing sentimental. If it was required, adequate comparisons would be Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith or Ella Fitzgerald. But in fact, this is not necessary because Maja Jaku’s music tells its own tale. It can be assumed that her voice will even become unflawed at a certain age.JAZZ HOT n°641_PARIS-FRANCE:Maja Jaku sings ballads for us. The lyrics and sometimes music are written by Maja Jaku herself and her husband and pianist Sasa Mutic. The humanistically coulored lyrics attest to experience. Her life has not always been easy (“Lost my country, Lost my friends, but I’ll never losse my Blues”). Besides, philosophical aspects are found in the lyrics, e.g. life is short, we shouldn’t waste our time, we should try to be responsible human beings. The songs are sung by a woman who does not try to pretend anything. The music is likeable and of classical accomplishment. Thus, two melodies derive from Harlen-Mercer and Wonder-Wrght. These are two interpretations and personal arrangements of Maja Jaku which are more refreshing (“My shinging hour”) and include more Jazz elements (“Lately”).
