About Me

Mali is the third poorest country in the world according to the Human Development Index of the United Nations Development Program. Poverty in Mali is generalized, affecting people, most of who live in rural areas. The country’s poor people lack of access to education and are vulnerable to illness and malnutrition. They have fewer opportunities to participate in social and economic life and their housing is inadequate. Life expectancy is low and infant mortality is high. The 11 million people of the Republic of Mali are among the poorest in the world. Life expectancy is only 54 years. The average annual per capita income is DM 530 (about US$250). The majorities of the poor people (86 per cent) live in rural areas, and the agricultural sector, mainly cotton and rice growing, accounts for 47 per cent of Mali’s Gross Domestic Product. The remote Dogon country in Northeastern Mali, one of the three project regions, is also affected by great poverty. Diseases due to poor hygiene are pandemic, and the level of education is extremely low. The inhabitants, mostly smallholders, live from onion and millet crops and livestock breeding.Every year, 36 million people die because they do not have enough to eat. In addition, whilst the world produces ample food for everyone, nearly 850 million people still suffer chronic hunger. Most of the time, people do not go hungry due to a lack of available food, but because they are too poor to either grow or buy enough to feed themselves and their families. Most poor people try to earn a living by growing food. In many parts of Africa, 80% of the populations are totally dependent on agriculture, leaving them vulnerable to weather patterns, crop failure, seasonal price changes and fluctuations in local and international market prices.
