MEZIPATRA - Czech Gay & Lesbian Film Festival

PICK YOUR FACE!

About Me

MEZIPATRA is the largest queer film festival in Central and Eastern Europe. The festival has been showcasing quality gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender film since 2000. The name in Czech means "mezzanine", i.e. the space between individual floors: a symbolic space for meeting of all kinds of people, regardless of their particularities. Mezipatra take place in October/ November and host around 80 films and 30 off-programme events each year.

Every edition of Mezipatra explores a theme (e.g. parenting, body image, coming of age, gender and social dissent, etc.) and an outstanding filmmaker (e.g. Pasolini, Fassbinder, Treut, Greyson, Ottinger). Q&A's with filmmakers are very popular with the mixed and enthusiastic audience.

Mezipatra gives three awards -- Main Jury Award for Best Feature Film, Student Jury Award for Best Short Film and Audience Award for Best Film. The juries are international and the jurors are a mix of festival programmers, filmmakers, artists and academics. The Audience Award is voted for on-line. The submission deadline is 30 June each year.

The Festival takes place in Prague, Brno and other cities in the Czech Republic. The film programme is accompanied by various non-filmic events - art and photography exhibitions, theatre performances, readings and conferences.

The festival themes often lead up to conferences and publications. Thus far, we have published Family Reunion, a collection of interviews with and photographs of queer parents from Central Europe and a collection of papers on the Media Image of Lesbians and Gays in the Czech Republic.

As of the 8th edition, Mezipatra has a special daily broadcasted by the Czech Television. Every day of the festival is covered by a news crew in a four-minute programme.
