About Me

www.genderbender.it
Gender Bender is an international Festival dedicated to new imagery related to gender identity, sexual orientation and body representation stemming from contemporary culture. Gender Bender offers a series of events ranging from film showings to theatrical production and dance performances, visual arts exhibitions, installation, round tables and conferences, live concerts and performances by musicians and dj, and clubbing events.
From 30 October to 4 November the city of Bologna is transformed into a stage to host the 5th edition of GENDER BENDER
The main event of the festival is the worldwide premiere of RARA (film) by the maestro Sylvano Bussotti, especially restored for the festival, thanks to the collaboration with the Cineteca of Bologna.
Filmed between 1967 and 1969, it features many of the main protagonists of the artistic panorama of the period, each having his own suggestive and touching portrait: from Franca Valeri to Julian Beck and the Living Theatre, from Laura Betti to Daria Nicolodi, to visual artists Mario Ceroli and Pino Pascali to opera singer Cathy Berberian.
The screening will take place at the Teatro Manzoni Saturday 3 November at 21.00, and will be accompanied by a live performance of the new score commissioned by the festival and created and performed by a 7-piece ensemble under the direction by Bussotti.
The festival also hosts numerous national premieres (among which excel the incredible portrait of the German stylist Karl Lagerfeld in “Lagerfeld Confidential”, and “Seven Easy Pieces”, the film in which Babette Mangolte documents the seven performances by Marina Abramovich hosted in the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2005, where she re-proposed performances by the likes of Bruce Nauman, Vito Acconci, Valie Export, Gina Pane and Joseph Beuys).
In the Performing Arts section we propose the premiers of United Sorry and their “Frans Poelstra, His Dramaturg And Bach”, as well as Ann Liv Young with her Snow White.
Finally the section entitled Sissy Avantgarde: Body, sex and politics in avant-garde cinema 1964 – 1983 presents a full selection of period works from the period, from underground film to artistic and militant documentaries, with the national premieres of works by Andy Warhol, Valie Export, Bruce Nauman, Rosa von Praunheim, James Broughton, Coni Beeson, Carole Roussopolos/Delphine Seyrig, Peter de Rome, Michael Kalmen and The Cockettes.
The detailed programme is available at www.genderbender.it.
