Sounds Like: Feedback on “Beautiful Escape: The Songs of The Posies Revisited
Where do I start with this? Well, how about "It's incredible!" Burning Sky Records follows up last year’s wonderful Jellyfish tribute (“Sensory Lullabies: The Ultimate Tribute to Jellyfish†with a very risky 3-disc set with the music of The Posies. This is no easy task, since The Posies music is some of the most complex melodic masterpieces ever made in the pop world, but there are honestly 45 well-done tracks by artists that obviously love the band's music.
Highlights include (and there are 45 of them) The Drowners’ "I May Hate You Sometime", which is radio ready and shows this song still sounds as current as it did when it was first released in 1988. Other rockers fair well on the album, too; Every Damn Day rocks out "Help Yourself" fiercely, and you can sense the raw emotion Peter Searcy puts into "Please Return It".
The Well Wishers’ "Everyone Moves Away" flows with perfect harmonies that would make Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow proud. Arguably the standout track is "You Avoid Parties" - it is gorgeously done by We Know, Plato! The guitars are replaced with keys and the song is sung with simple, yet passionate vocals that show just what a beautiful escape The Posies music is.
The set also includes great tracks by 4 present and former members of the band, making this one of the most essential albums of 2008. I'm not sure how you top a tribute album like this, but if anybody can do it will be Burning Sky Records.
