Throwback Suburbia

Retro-bution!

About Me

In February of 2006, Throwback Suburbia declared its state of band-hood in Portland, Oregon. Since that time, they have released two EP's and three videos, are playing to packed crowds wherever they land, and have launched a national radio campaign becoming the most played new artist on several FM stations across the country. They won the Garage Band/Budweiser "True Music" contest and distribution to thousands of Live 365 radio stations including intenselymodern.com where they are the only unsigned band in regular rotation. They've had an unprecedented FOUR songs simultaneously in the top 10 at garageband.com, including a spot at number one!
If this wasn't enough, Throwback Suburbia has landed artist endorsements with Eastwood Guitars, Ernie Ball strings, In-Tune guitar pics, Dipinto guitars, Rockstar energy drink and several others. They have opened for national acts Veruca Salt, the Gin Blossoms, Everclear, Ours and Rose Hill Drive and have established a loyal fan base in their hometown all in just 18 months. Clearly Throwback Suburbia is living its life in dog years.
Drawing the attention of world-renowned producers Mark Plati and Tom Mckay of the Macchiato Kids (the Cure, David Bowie, Joy Drop) the band's four members Mike Collins (drums) Jimi Evans (voice and guitar) Paul Bond (guitar) and Eric French (bass) had their work cut out for them with trips back and forth between Portland and New York City finalizing the details with Plati and McKay on the bands latest EP Four Play. Upon its release, both local and national magazines jumped on board boasting of the commanding performances, explosive energy and delicious melodic pop sensibilities exhibited on the record.
Rock Legends Earl Slick (guitar for David Bowie), Eric Dover (Jellyfish), James Guffee (The Tories) and Greg Williams (producer-The Dandy Warhols) jumped in at Myspace giving the thumbs-up to Throwback Suburbia and Four Play, while on the home front all of the main rock stations including Portland's dearly beloved KNRK began showing their support by showering the band with airplay. Perhaps the ultimate stamp of approval for the band though, came from legendary KROQ DJ Rodney Bingenheimer. The first DJ to play The Sex Pistols, Ramones, Blondie, Cheap Trick, Coldplay, Oasis and many, many more. Bingenheimer loves Throwback Suburbia and has added them to his Sunday night show.
Their summer 2007 tour took them down the west coast of the United States with club dates, interviews and record store appearances in Lake Tahoe, Chico, Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles for the International Pop Overthrow), and Las Vegas. 2007 ended with Throwback Suburbia being featured on several Northwest TV shows including PDX49's "E-Zone", FOX12's "Better" and local favorite PDXposed. They begin 2008 with a coveted spot at the annual NAMM convention in LA. They'll also be featured on an upcoming Posies Tribute CD "Beautiful Escape" which is being overseen by the Posies themselves.
The ever-increasing fan support for Throwback Suburbia points to the powerful live performances they repeatedly demonstrate. That alone is a remarkable discovery in the modern day musical workings that have produced a surplus of unremarkable bands. Yet each time they play, Mike, Jimi, Paul, and Eric exude the blissful confidence that can only come from doing something you love exceedingly well.
If you should find yourself having trouble locating a pulse in today's music, Throwback Suburbia is the proof of life in powerpop.

"Now THAT'S good power-pop!"
- Phil O'Keefe, EQ Magazine
"Throwback Suburbia have captured a blend of muscular pop and intelligent songwriting that will make you happy no matter if you think pop music died when Brian stopped touring with the Beach Boys, or when Cheap Trick left the Budokan. No-frills, irresistibly catchy power pop with singalong choruses you won't be able to get out of your head for days. Bravo Throwback Suburbia! Bravo!"
- All Access Magazine
"...a band of fine musicians."
- Tony Visconti (legendary producer for David Bowie, T-Rex, The Smiths, Thin Lizzy, etc..)
“I can’t imagine a radio anywhere on the planet that would not sound at home with 'Circles' playing on it!”
– Mike Robinson (owner of Eastwood Guitars)
"Throwback Suburbia's two EPs, 'Four Play' and 'Eight Tracks', are so easy and enduring it feels like cheating. Everything is laid out perfectly: the swelling, harmony-laden choruses, the cleverly constructed bridges. It's OK Go sans the gimmicky treadmills, Spoon with an extra dose of distortion - real rock done the way it should be."
- Las Vegas City Life Magazine
“Soon to capture adolescents nationwide."
- Willamette Week Magazine
“They have remembered what too many rock artists of late have forgotten - that truly great songs also have truly great lyrics.”

NAMM Show Update
- January 7, 2008 -
As most of you know, we had the honor of playing at the NAMM show in Anaheim, CA last weekend. We were guests of the "John Lennon Educational Tour Bus", and it was a great experience for us. We met some of our sponsors face to face and picked up a few NEW sponsors as well! We did a publicity shoot with Eastwood guitars and were informed that our song CIRCLES is going to be featured on an upcoming "Eastwood Guitars" compilation CD! Anyone that purchases an Eastwood guitar will get a copy. Eastwood artists include The White Stripes, The Buzzcocks, The Decemberists, Squeeze, Wilco, The Cars, Dire Straits, Junior Watson and many more! Our song "Circles" will be the opening track on the CD!
We also did some interviews with local and international webzines. We'll let you know when they are available to read.
There's some other interesting things brewing for the band that we'll let you know about as soon as we can! Thanks for all the support and interest in the band over the last two years. February 3rd marks our two year anniversary as a band and we couldn't have done any of this without the support of our loyal fans!!

Each festival features between 100-180 of the best pop bands from around the world, and the purpose is two-fold: to give every worthy band a chance to play their music in a festival atmosphere, and to bring pop music the attention it so richly deserves. The IPO Festival has garnered press in several noteworthy papers in each city in which the festival has been held, in addition to creating a very positive buzz about pop music within the inner circles of major labels. Many bands who have played IPO have received major label deals.
