Ali Emre Kayhan was born in London, U.K. and moved to Istanbul, Turkey at the age of 1. He started his musical training at the age of 7 with mandolin and switched to play guitar at 9. In 1984, started to play trombone at the Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory in Istanbul, Turkey. He studied with Mr. Ziya Polat, Mr. Aycan Teztel and Mr. Sezai Tarakci. Completed his high school degree in 1990. Then moved to London, U.K. and studied at the Royal College of Music with Prof. Arthur Wilson. In 1993, Prof. Paul Schreckenberger invited Emre as a guest student to study six months with him at the Hochschule für Musik Mannheim in Germany. In 1997, Emre received his Bachelors diploma in classical trombone from the Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory in Istanbul, Turkey.He received a Master in Music scholarship from the North Texas University and studied one term with Dr. Vern Kagarice in Fall 1999. He decided to continue his Masters in jazz studies and received another scholarship from the Trinity College of Music in London, where he studied with Mr. Mark Bassey. And he received his Post Graduate Jazz Trombone Diploma in 2001.Emre joined the European Broadcast Union Jazz Orchestra in Stockholm, 1998 and in Budapest, 2001. He played with one of the Turkish famous piano players Kerem Görsev at the Istanbul International Jazz Festival in 1996, 1997 and 1998. He also played at the various jazz clubs in that period of time with Kerem and featured two of his CDs. In 1996, he joined trombonist Steve Turre’s workshop and had a chance to play with him in Istanbul. In 2002, he formed a four trombones and rhythm section group called 4-Bones and played at the 10th Istanbul International Jazz Festival. In 2005, Emre joined guitarist Neset Ruacan’s Quartet along with a special guest Claudio Roditi.Emre continuous to play with his two trombones and rhythm section group called Funkbones. He plays standards and his original compositions with his quartet and quintet under his name. Also, he plays duo with guitarist Cem Nasuhoglu since 2003.Emre has been a member of the Turkish Radio Big Band in Istanbul since 1995 and the solo trombonist of the band since 2001.In 2006, Emre produced a jazz radio programme at TRT (Turkish Radio of Istanbul, FM 88.20) Radio 3 called “Sadece Caz” on Tuesdays at 23.00 hours.

Sounds Like: My hobbies are include:Photography: I started to be interested in photography seriously in 2001. I have a Ricoh manual camera. I take photos both in black&white and colour, but especially in black&white. I admire Edouard Boubat, who is a French photographer/author wrote a very valuable book about all aspects of photography called: The Art Of Photography. I also admire a Turkish photographer/author Prof. Sabit Kalfagil, who wrote a book called “Composition” is a valuable reference book in Turkish language.Travelling: Since 1989, I have visited and stayed countries include: United Kingdom:London, Oxford, Henley, Leeds, Huddersfield; Germany: Frankfurt, Bayreuth, Mannheim, Aalen, Nurnberg; Sweden: Stockholm; Hungary: Budapest; U.S.A.: Dallas, Denton, New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Wisconsin,Elkhorn; Malta: Valetta, Mdina, Marsascala, Gozo; Turkey: All of Marmara, Ege and Middle Anatolia include Ankara, Izmir, Tekirdag, Sarkoy, Florya, Canakkale, Kumburgaz, Bergama, Denizli, Pamukkale, Yalova, Kusadasi, Kapadokya, Erdek, Bursa, Bodrum, Marmaris, Cunda Adasi, Balikesir, Bozcaada, Edremit, Side, Zonguldak.Water Polo: I was playing water polo at high school at Galatasaray Sports Club. I do not play seriously now, but I swim and play sometimes.Guitar: I started to play classical guitar at the age of 9. I just took lessons three weeks from Firat Kiziltug. Then I studied myself. I and my friend Kaan Celebi played together at local pubs and restaurants in Istanbul between 1986 – 1995. I switched to electric guitar in 1994 and started to play rock and blues. I formed a blues group influenced by Robben Ford, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Gary Moore and Santana. The group played gigs but dispersed in 1997. Since then I have not played gigs, but I play on my own at home. I may come back with surprises.Composing Theatre Music: I have comissioned to write the famous musical “Seven Brides For Seven Brothers” by the Yakacik High School in 1989. I transcribed and arranged the original music of the play to Violin, Flute, Classical Guitar trio. I played guitar and also coached the actors. We attended the high school theatre competition and got 3rd in Istanbul.I have comissioned to write music for another famous play called “Animal Farm” of George Orwell in 1996. I composed original music in the style of blues. I coached the actors and played elecric guitar with the group live at every play. I also played a short role of Old Pig.
