MFO

About Me

We are a 13-piece big band based in Perth, Australia. We formed in 2004 as a creative outlet for composers who have graduated from the composition course at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). Since then we have produced 3 recording projects, toured the eastern states of Australia twice and play regularly around Perth. If you would like to support this creative jazz orchestra, then please buy a CD, USB drive or sweet merchandise (see below) - Thank you - we hope to see you soon.

***Check Out Our Sweet Merchandise***

MFO's mission is to tour, record and perform original new music for jazz orchestra. As you can imagine this does cost money. If you like what we do and would like to donate to the cause... please do so. Every bit helps. Thank You!

Influences: Bob Brookmeyer, Graeme Lyall, Ed Partyka, Thad Jones, Bill Holman, Maria Schnieder, John Hollenbeck, Village Vanguard Orchestra, Vienna Art Orchestra, Count Basie, Rainer Tempel, Gil Evans, Charles Mingus, George Russell, Arvo Part, Jim McNeely, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Grabowski, Ten Part Invention
Sounds Like: "These layered compositions and scoring convey colour, atmosphere and movement far more effectively and with greater interest than the stock standard arrangements often heard from big bands. Francis, understandably, has attracted international interest with his outstanding orchestra and compelling compositions."
John McBeath - The Weekend Australian

"Their musicianship is flawless, with some impossibly seasoned mature playing... innovative, dynamic, exploiting the power and versatility of the collective... Enchanting, unforgettable, moving music!"
Lloyd Bradford Syke - Australian Stage

"...an excellent and inspiring night of improvised and composed music at a high quality level."
Eric Pozza - Canberra Jazz

"Mace Francis deserves recognition as a big band leader with his own vision and his own sound."
Bill Donaldson - Cadence Magazine - www.cadencebuilding.com

"His themes are melodically pleasing and rhythmically strong. Francis has definite goals in mind, and has assembled a first class ensemble to help him reach them."
Jack Bowers - allaboutjazz.com

"Lyrical, beautifully-textured, unrushed...a little-big-band that sounds bigger than its twelve-member-strength."
Doug Spencer - Weekend Planet - ABC Radio National
