10/20/06- This sister and brother duo were adopted from our shelter as kittens that were born to an abandoned (pregnant) momcat we rescued. Their owners are moving south and cannot take them along. Here are their descriptions in their owner's words: Emma is a female black domestic short hair w/a white belly. She is 2 ½ years old, spayed and has all her shots. She is an indoor cat who has never been outside. Though shy at first with strangers, she is very friendly and loving and great around children. She loves to cuddle and sit on your lap whenever possible. She is probably the most affectionate cat I have ever known. She is big and very laid back, but also likes to have her fun too. Emma also has a brother Logan (also posted on this site) who she has been with since before birth and is looking to be adopted with him. Anyone looking for 2 cats would be lucky to have her and her brother. Logan is a male Black, Tan, & White Tabby, 2 ½ years old, neutered, w/all his shots. He is never been outside. He is complimented all the time on his beautiful markings. He is very playful and active. He is friendly with strangers and great around children. He really enjoys being patted and scratched. Logan and Emma make a great pair for anyone looking to adopt two cats.
6-20-07 Arabella was rescued by Carol a friend of ours with her mom and siblings living in a boiler room. When she was the first of the litter caught and her little eye was terribly infected but after some TLC she is doing much better! Arabella is a sweet and sometimes shy girl who has a adorable muted purr on her that makes her all the more unforgettable. She has adjusted well to her foster home and she is ready to meet the one for her and get on with the business of being a pampered young lady. Her brother Churchill has recently been caught as well, we will post his picture soon as well as mom and other sibling when they are in hand. More to come!
5-22-07 Juliet was finally taken off the street she was dumped on by her owner who lived very comfortably across the street. The view from the handicap ramp Juliet had to call home for next 2-3 years! We do not know how many litters she's had but she is spayed now and a loving mother to mer boy & girl. The previous owner came out and gave several stories about why this cat was out on the streets & not spayed none of which washed with her rescuer or any of us including sweet Juliet. She gave birth to who knows how many litters in the cold/hot conditions all alone because of her selfish nature. Five year's old now Juliet was so malnourished when she was found she couldn't wait for Chris to put the food in the trap before running in to eat!! She and her babies have been living in a foster home and enjoying the good life and food on tap! Juliet loves being brushed and snuggling with her little ones who are growing like weeds, Kassie and Teddy are still a little hissy mostly out of fear not a vicious will. They just need to get used to being safe and all will be well with the world. We look forward to giving all three of these beautiful Maine coon cats a great and loving home with a loving family to care for each of them and erase the bad memories.
I'd like to meet:
I am seeking homes for the many cats in my care now and the ones to come. I want to find homes for each cat with a person well suited for them. I am careful about placement and require recommendations from those who know you and your vet to insure you will give the best care you can to whoever you choose. Please help the cats with your TAX-DEDUCTIBLE donations. WE ARE A REGISTERED, NON-PROFIT PUBLIC CHARITY. 100% of your donation goes to the animals because we are ALL VOLUNTEERS and draw no salaries! We have a food donation box at Pet Supplies Plus in West Roxbury, MA and would love any dry or canned cat food! If you have an old vehicle you don't want, a station wagon/minivan/SUV-something that can hold cats and supplies, we would be so grateful to have it and you can have the tax deduction. IF YOU CAN OFFER HELP IN SOME WAY, CONTACT US. During the warm months we need extra foster homes for abandoned pregnant cats. If you can help give a cat a safe place to raise her kittens, please let us know. For those who've considered letting your female cat have 1 litter before spaying her, please consider taking in an already pregnant cat. Read what happened to the latest pregnant cat we rescued who would've died under a dumpster somewhere; http://lizerk.livejournal.com/379399.html +++++++++ If you know of someone who has everything they need and loves cats but can't have another, a donation to 2nd Chance in their name would be a great alternative gift idea!
To help abandoned cats lucky enough to find space in our shelter, or find foster homes to safely have their kittens, plz send a check to "Second Chance Shelter" and mail to: Second Chance, 675 VFW Parkway #266, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467
To help feral cats that are trapped, neutered and returned outdoors (and to stop the yearly avalanche of sick and dying kittens born outside), make out a check to "HubCats", and mail to: HubCats, PO Box 1340, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130

8/15/05- Anyone calling our shelter this year heard our sobering message of how we're swamped with cats of dead people who left no provisions for their animals. Lil' Fella is no exception. He belonged to a lovely woman named Ruth who I met at the vet's, a very youthful, talkative and friendly 70ish woman. That day I'd brought in a cat that had been in a dog's mouth(4 puncture wounds around her abdomen). When I told Ruth the story of how she had 106 degree fever and a collapsed lung, Ruth got down on the floor and kissed her head. She adopted her and we kept in touch until she died in late April '05 of leukemia. I took 3 of her 6 older cats and 5 of her 6 cats have found permanent homes except Lil' Fella. UPDATE APRIL '06 - Lil' Fella went to live at Booksmith & was a perfect store cat since he hung out in an office in the back and never went near busy Harvard St. After months, I got a frantic call from a terrified employee that the store mgr had their handyman dump Lil' Fella at MSPCA because he pooped outside of the litter box occasionally. The woman in whose office he lived had no problem with it, she cleaned up but with no warning the mgr suddenly ordered he be disappeared without consulting anyone! Shame on her for her callousness, cruelty and thoughtlessness and shame on "Daniel's Dad Handyman" for being a dope since 20+ years we've been neighbors in JP and he's brought me abandoned cats before....growing weary of idiots! I went right to MSPCA and got our terrified "little" guy and brought him back to the shelter. Lil' Fella is a very lucky cat, despite all his bad luck, things could've turned out much worse for him. BTW, he's not little at all, he's about 18lbs! He is very shy but very sweet. He will hiss at people he doesn't know and when he knows you he will not get off your lap! He loves to snuggle, is neutered, healthy and up-to-date on shots. He lived with several other cats before but would do fine alone and we get the impression he would love his own human to devote himself to.
8/21/06-taken in by a Greenwich RI shelter that found her next to be euthanized in a RI municipal shelter, Marisol was hugely pregnant! They transfered her to us where she had her kittens in a foster home and lovingly raised them. The kittens were adopted, we had her spayed, vaccinated and she tested positive for FIV-although we had all her 5 kittens fixed and NONE of them tested positive~! Marisol is a sweet and docile girl who will do best in a home by herself or with a couple other cats. FIV requires no medicines and she is very healthy. FIV can only be transfered by vicious wounds-saliva to blood or vice-versa, so being a docile cat, she will never transfer it to any other cat. She is young, about 2, and would make a nice companion.
6/20/07- A shadowy figure appeared on my porch in March and would dash away at the 1st sign of me! In April he would come within 15 feet of me as I tossed kibble down the stairs to him and he playfully chased the morsels down and ate them. In May, he meowed at me and I knew he was NOT a feral cat! Gilbert was trapped as a kitten and neutered and was to be released back into his colony but escaped in the yard of the trapper who lives 1/4 mile from me-and he made his way over to the right place! I knew he'd been trapped and neutered because of his ear tip(the left ear cut flatly across),so I consulted the trapper and found out his history. Gilbert had suffered a cut in his armpit-ripped it open on a fence or something, and although the wound was quite old, he needed stitches because of the bad place it was in. We had his shots updated and he tested neg/neg for feluke/fiv. NOW THIS LITTLE GUY IS A CUPCAKE! Sweet as anything, he is a love to people and submissive to other cats. He is only just about 1 year old and one of the most loving and deserving, unassuming guys ever!
3/7/07-Ziggy was found last month sitting in the middle of an Everett street, unable to see because his puss-filled eyes had frozen tightly shut in the bitter cold. Cars were going around him but nobody had the compassion to stop and pick him up but for one woman who had 7 cats and a dog of her own. She contacted us and we took him on. He ended up only having a bad cold and eye infections but if he hadn't have been run over, he might have died under someone's porch from being sick, starved and run down. Ziggy is now all better! He's now neutered, vaccinated and just about a year old. He's put on 2-3lbs and looks very healthy-bordering chubby! He tested FIV positive, which is an immune deficiency of unknown degree-usually slight and insignificant if kept safe and indoors the rest of his life. He is very sweet, playful, young and friendly. He can be around other cats as long as they get along-FIV is only spread by severe bite wounds. Won't someone make the rest of his life easy?

11/06-Mr Orange is a battered tomcat who was abandoned on the streets of a Dorchester neighborhood. 2 years ago, a couple moved in who were sensitive to his suffering & they began to feed him daily. He lived in their yard until one day a dog nearly took off his hind leg. Hubcats put his leg back together and neutered him but had no room for him, so we took him in. Despite all his troubles, abandonment, starvation, and abuse (he coils back and squints-preparing to be hit when you go to pet him because it's obvious he's been hit so much), he's a good natured and healthy cat. He's about 10-12 years old, neutered, up to date in shots has gained a good 4 lbs since being with us to be a normal to chubby 10-11lb cat! He gets along with other cats, cautious of them and people after all he's been through, he just needs a safe place to live out his life.
6-27-07 Sheera was picking up kittens and cats at the MSPCA Angel when she were shown a tiny kitten that was abandoned feeding off a mother with much bigger kittens who could crush this little one. She called Iris's foster mom and asked if she could try introducing it to Iris of course was the answer. Iris took no time deciding as soon as the little one cried out bathing it and laying down so the feeding and bonding could begin.
6-18-07 Iris was brought to our attention my our Myspace friend Kathy who's son found them in his garage. The kittens were born the morning we received the new family. They were all quite underweight the smallest only weighting 2.0 oz the biggest a mere 2.9 oz. Now just a short week later they weight 6 oz minimum each, a very nice turn of events. Iris gave us some worry herself, she would not drink and barely ate for several days we took her to the vet and no surprise she had a fever and a low grade infection. Luckily her foster mom was on top of it and her, she was given fluids to keep her hydrated and bathed with a wash cloth to cool her. She was fed/kept hydrated with a syringe for several days and slowly she began to feed and drink for herself. A big relief to us was the fact that she was found and brought to us because they all could have been lost. There are 2 males and 2 females 1 set of boy /girl have 6 toes in front & 6 in back, the other two have 5 in front but the boy has 4 back toes and the girl has 5. Such sweet feet I love them and can't wait to nibble on them when they are bigger! Iris is a first and last time mother who is loving and sweet to all she encounters and will be so very happy to find a home with someone or ones to love in it. She is such a joy who looks to her foster mom for guidance and love. We hope to find someone to continue this journey with her!
6-21-07 Luna and her family were surrendered by her mom after the landlord revoked the permission for pets in the building leaving a week to place them. Luna, Stella, Scar, Crystal, Star & Tabitha we very much loved and it shows it their loving and attentive personalities! Luna had a gold crescent moon on her face and Stella and a sleek ebony beauty with a loving heart. Scar is the orange boy he loves to climb and sit on our feet as do his sisters. They are very interested in humans and love to be played with they are such a sweet loving family they even have folded in some kittens from the foster home they are in to love as their own! Luna even fed them her heart is HUGE and her eyes the most beautiful green you have ever seen... These are sweet hearts that will be remembered long after they are in new home! Their former owner is crushed and I keep in touch and send pictures to them with update to ease their sense of loss. I will make sure whomever adopts these honeys send pictures for me to forward to the ones who will always miss them!

CAT GODDESS
Tiny feet soft and gentle
I remember when u fit in my hand
A little fluff ball of delight
Your head was too big for your body
You could barely hold it
So I helped you
Do you remember that
Probably not
Those tiny feet though
You still touch my face in the night so gently
To wake me for a cuddle
Reminding me
I'm not alone
Helping me to hold my head
When it hangs low
You always seemed to know
As you grew
Full bellied
With life
I remember
Watching with wonder
At you my sweet
Little friend
Becoming mother
Your belly was
But you shone like the
Moon you are
And the tiny
Miracles you
Trusted me to
Help you bring along
Reminded me
Of that day
When I brought you home
I watched you nurse and
Protect them
This nurturer you are
I wanted to thank you
For the time you spent with us
You changed my daughter's eyes
Gave her hope again
When she was lost
Perhaps
You will forgive me
Today as I leave you
With them
And know I won't forget
The gift of love you are
I only hope that you will bring
The same joy to another
When at last you find
Your new home
Goodbye Luna

5/14/07-Virgil once was a house pet. We found him coming to the shelter's door in our Jamaica Plain neighborhood-in search of food. One freezing cold night a few months ago we shoved a pristine but cold and hungry Virgil in the door and put him up for the night. The next night we heard a woman calling, "Here Kitty" up and down the street, so I asked what the kitty looked like and returned Virgil to her after some BS story about him being her housemate's cat. 3 months later, he showed up famished repeatedly again, this time with an upper-respiratory infection, eye infection and cuts on his ears and nose from not being neutered and fighting on the streets. BUT LOOK AT THIS SWEET FACE-how could they neglect him so! If we hear anyone calling for him again, we're ignoring it. Virgil is now fixed, vaccinated, and no thanks to his former owners-tested negative for FELV/FIV. He came off the street in the pouring rain and is ever so grateful to be fed and dry. He is a sweet cat who doesn't seem to mind the other cats. He is about 2-3 years old, has a medium-length coat which he's starting to clean up now that he feels better. He will be a beautiful boy in a couple of months now that he's inside and safe.
2/3/07-for months we've promised to take in these 2 kitties who were being fed by a guy who works at Pet Supplies Plus-where we buy our stuff(BEST PRICES AROUND!). With the onset of this terrible weather and no break in sight to the abandoned animal problem, we couldn't put the poor things off any longer, so without an available cage-they are now in the shelter's bathroom! We were told they are two teenage kittens but upon being vetted, they found that the little one in front has been a mom, she's about 2 years old and TINY-all of 5+1/2 pounds! The boy is probably her son, and he's about 9 months old with a little white spot on his neck while mom is all black except for a few white hairs. Outside for the better part of a year, Eliana suffered lengthy eye infections for which she's now being treated and responding beautifully. She is a so obviously a dumped-pet, she purrs right away when you pet her-loudly! Her son is still very frightened and was born outside, so he'll need some time to adjust. Both now altered, they tested negative for disease and are vaccinated.
3/1/07-Do you have a place in your heart and home for this pair of affectionate young orange tabbies? Jackson and Crispin started off life as homeless kittens--we rescued them when they were living with their mom in an old junk-filled garage last winter. Their search for a home stalled out last spring after Crispin was diagnosed with a slight heart murmur--it seemed like no one wanted to adopt the boys after that, even though Crispin's echocardiogram showed no underlying heart disease at all. Then, a couple of months ago, Jackson got urinary crystals(common to neutered males)& needs a special diet. Both boys are happy and active cats, who love to play and be petted. They just need a "mom" or "dad" willing to do a little extra monitoring. The boys are now 16 months old, and they are very bonded with each other. They often sleep together in the same bed, and they would like to be adopted as a pair so they can stay together. They are very affectionate with people they know, and love to be petted and talked to. Both are very shy at first with new people, and will probably take 3 or 4 weeks to relax with their new "mom" or "dad" once they are adopted. Jackson and Crispin have been vaccinated, neutered, and tested negative for FIV/FeLV. They also have been microchipped.
This is Justine is a beautiful girl who we love to pieces!

3/7/07- We received a call from a worried teenager that this little girl Regina was dumped & starving outside a Dorchester apt. bldg. We took her in a couple of months ago, right before it got bitter cold and thought she might be pregnant but wasn't, and now she's spayed, tested negative for diseases and vaccinated. She's quite young and petite-right around a year old and could possible grow a bit more. She wants to be alpha cat and may be better off as an only kitty since her days on the street and starving have made her see other cats as competition for food and survival. She loves people and attention when she gets to know you. The vet said she had eye trauma and 1 pupil is permanently enlarged but it's an old injury and healed now-hardly noticable. She's a little doll and deserves a cushy life from now on! PLZ EMAIL US FOR AN APPLICATION
4/15/07-This 20lb hunk of love was found abandoned in Newton. Taken in by a kind woman, she had him neutered and fattened him up! He is 7-9 years old, very friendly with people and other cats who are non-aggressive like him. He's a happy, healthy boy who would make a great addition to any home!
This one year old boy may not have a name but he is a sweetie with out question!
5/21/07-In her foster mom's words,"Kira and her son were picked up by a neighbor of one of our foster homes and dumped off with a promise to take them soon which never came. She has beautiful girl with long ebony locks who bothers no one and just loves to sit back to watch everything from a distance. She is good with other cats and when she must be handled is docile when wrapped in a towel for things like nail clipping. She lived peacefully until a number of changes in the household caused a dominance issue when the pecking order changed. Kira was now an outsider with the new boss kitty and after much trying to resolve the situation, Kira had to move into a large cage for her own good. I hate having to keep her in a cage in my house when everyone else is running free but I have her across from my couch so I look at her when I sit and feel guilty and hope for a good home where she can be free again." Kira is about 3 years old, spayed, tested neg/neg for FELV/FIV.

TO BE CLEAR I LOVE ALL ANIMALS AND THE PIT BULL IS AT THE TOP OF THAT LIST NEXT TO MY BELOVED CATS! FOR CENTURIES THEY HAVE BEEN OWNED AND LOVED UNTIL THEY STARTED BEING ABUSED AND MISUSED BY PEOPLE WHO ARE CRIMINALS OR SHOULD SHOULD BE CONSIDERED ONE BY THE TREATMENT THEY HAVE GIVEN TO ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND LOYAL BREEDS OF DOG. REMEMBER PETEY FROM THE LITTLE RASCALS HE WAS A PIT BULL WAS ANYONE WORRIED ABOUT DARLA'S SAFETY?? NO BECAUSE THEY LIKE ANY DOG ARE A GOOD DOG UNLESS ONE OF THE FOLLOWING HAS OCCURRED: INBREEDING, ABUSE, AND NEGLECT. PEOPLE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO INBREED BECAUSE IT CAUSES AGGRESSION, BIRTH DEFECT AND STUPIDITY! A GOOD EXAMPLE IS THE ROTTWIELLER BECAUSE DIRT BAGS POLLUTED THEIR GENE POOL IT WILL TAKE A LONG TIME FOR THE BREED TO FULLY RECOVER FROM IT. I DON'T WANT PIT BULLS TO SUFFER THE SAME FATE AS THE OTHER MISUSED BREEDS BEFORE. IN MY LIFETIME IT WAS THE GERMAN SHEPARD, THEN THE DOBERMAN PINCHER WAS TURNED IN TO A WEAPON, FROM THERE IT WAS THE ROTTWIELLER. NOW THE PIT BULL IS THE TARGET. THE AKITA OR THE MASTIFF WILL BE THE NEXT WHEN THEY HAVE TO MOVE ON BECAUSE THEY CAN'T OWN THEIR WEAPON OF CHOICE. PEOPLE WHO USE AND ABUSE DOGS FOR WEAPONS ARE CRIMINALS AND NEED TO BE TREATED AS SUCH. WE ARE JUDGED AS A SOCIETY ON HOW WE TREAT OUR CHILDREN, ELDERLY AND ANIMALS HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED?? I WANT TO BE REMEMBERED AS A CHAMPION FOR THOSE WITHOUT A VOICE WILL YOU JOIN ME??
YOU KNOW YOU'VE BEEN DOING RESCUE TOO LONG WHEN You have a mental list of people you'd like to spay, neuter, or euthanize.
You stopped at a house with a "Free Puppies" sign in the yard to have an educational "chat," and your kids had to post your bail.
Running out of paper towels is a household crisis.
You not only KNOW all the characteristics of a good stool, you discuss them at dinner.
Your checks have messages on them like "Subtract Two Testicles For Every Four Feet."
You have a bumper sticker that reads "My German Shepherd Is Smarter Than Your Graduate Student".
You secretly wonder about such things as how animals can manage without wiping.
You absentmindedly pat people on the head or scratch them behind their ears.
Given the choice of having
your teeth cleaned or
their teeth cleaned, they get
their teeth cleaned.
You not only allow pets on the couch, guests have to sit on the floor because the dog has "territorial issues".
Your spouse missed the final game of the World Series because the cat wanted to watch his favorite video, "Birds of North America".
Anytime the animal appears lethargic, you go on-line and investigate Vetmed websites, pose questions to your address book and on e-lists, and by the time you digest all the information and field the correspondence, the animal has torn out the window screens and left something disgusting in your favorite pair of shoes.
Your chat room handle is "Queen of Spayeds".
You and your vet are on a first name basis and he genuflects when you enter the waiting room. His daughter at Harvard refers to you as "Auntie".
You needed a prescription to recover from "Old Yeller".
You've forwarded more warnings about the dangers of chocolate, onions, and mistletoe than the National Center for Disease Control has issued about anthrax and smallpox.
You wear white year 'round, not because you are flaunting a fashion law or belong to a religious sect but because it is
bleachable.
By the time you investigate different flea control products, their advantages and potential risks, natural versus chemical methods, and study the life cycle of the flea, any fleas have died of old age.
You tell your children to "heel!" in a grocery store.
For relaxation, you went mall hopping with your girlfriends. Your eyes Glazed over when you saw a sign in front of a pet shop, "20% Off All Puppies & Kittens," and you slapped three security guards before they got you safely contained in the manager's office.
People are still talking about your spay-neuter holiday greeting from last year, "Deck the Halls with Balls of Collies".

RESCUERS PRAYER
Now I lay me down to rest
I pray my soul can stand this test
Of watching critters lose their homes
While owners gripe and cry and moan
I long for strength of spirit that
They'll find a loving home again
Where they will know a loving heart
I can't do much, but it's a start
And spare me from the owner's pleas
About the baby's allergies
Or how they're moving out of state
Or spitefulness 'tween cat and mate
Please keep me sane while dealing with
The woman who bought as a gift
A wriggling tiny ball of fluff
That now is playing way too rough
Remind me I should bite my lip
When confronted with "he grew too quick"
"I didn't know he'd get so large"
"He seems to think that he's in charge"
Protect my heart when I hear them say
"I think we'll breed our cat one day"
Sometimes I think it'll break in two
Each day brings trials harsh and new
And if I die before I wake
I pray one hopeless soul you'll take,
My tears are gone, my faith is bare
Lord, please hear my rescue prayer
