Freckles' Friends

Freckles' Friends is a 501c3 non-profit organization that is raising funds to build a no-kill pet shelter for our rural area of middle TN. (No-Kill being defined as we will not kill an adoptable pet.) In the meantime, we have a foster program in which pets are temporarily fostered in homes until we can find a permanent home for them. Our pets are listed on www.petfinder.com and www.1-800-save-a-pet.com. In addition, we are working to promote spay/neuter as the only solution to pet overpopulation that has is such an enormous problem in our area. Unfortunately, there is no shelter for county residents and the 'city' shelter is no real shelter. It has concrete block walls with no heat or air conditioning. It is estimated that over 90% of the animals that enter that 'shelter' are destroyed. We organized Freckles' Friends in May of 2006 to work towards a better world for our pets and we are steadily growing. It has been a struggle to get community support but it seems that the tide is turning in our favor and we are starting to feel that there is a light at the end of the tunnel as we gain volunteers and donors. Unfortunately, this area is very depressed economically, the county population is only 18,000 with 17% being below poverty level (as of 1999 statistics but if anything, that percentage has grown). Only 65% of the adults over 25 have finished high school. We need the help of people outside our area if we are going to be able to truly make a difference in educating people about the need to spay and neuter or to (hopefully) build a decent, progressive shelter.To find out more about our organization see our web site at www.frecklestn.org.
