Steve Iggnorant always like a good laugh...especially when I told him my band Rubella Ballet had decided to all dress in Zillahs home made Day-Glo clothes and play live under only a black UV light so it goes all psychedelic................The picture was taken by my good friend Richard Heslop, we were both 19, we were both part of the hardcore Adam & the Antz army, I even lived four doors down the same street as Adam in Queensway drive, Notting Hill Gate, London 1978/79 and spoke to him regularly after gigs at the Gate Cinema bar in Notting Hill Gate, west London and had been to nearly all the early Antz gigs in London late 1978 early 79 until we went to the first gigs Crass ever did in London in 1979.............................It was just something so different, it was what we were searching for, we were two rebelling punk skateboarders with bleached blonde hair and red and black make up on one eye with the Adam & the Antz T.shirt....see pics below.............we were also searching for girls which is where I met Zillah and four of her mates, she came up to me at one of the first Crass gigs, Conway hall, London 1979, I was at with Richard and Zillah asked me if there were any parties after the gig and I looked at Richard and we both said "Yeah follow us" we then proceeded to take them back to our flat in Zillah's car.......There was no party and the girls sussed us out right away........but we were the master of all that was punk parties and said "wait outside for 15 minutes” which they agreed...............We emerged 20 minutes later slightly out of breath and said it was ready..........The girls walked in and pissed themselves laughing at what we thought was a work of art and the most punk thing ever...........it was in-fact a flat that we had painted gloss black, over everything except the bed and carpet, with one light bulb in the corner..................The girls laughed for ages and we all had a great party coz Richard had the best record collection ever and wicked sound system, the girls loved it, we partied all night and we have all hung out ever since ...........28 years to be exact........................Me and Zillah were also at the infamous gig that Crass asked the audience to get on stage and have a go at playing music, I had a go on Penny's drums and Zillah went on the mic and we made up a whole bunch of noise for a while which at the time sounded great.........and that was the start of Rubella Ballet I suppose.........................It was also at Dial house that I used Penny’s drum kit in their rehearsal room to write the music and drum beats for Background to malfunction and Sick Butchers (B-Side) and to add some dynamics to the now massive hit Tube Disaster by Flux of Pink Indians. The answer to a lot of peoples questions to why I left FOPI after Tube Disaster and a few gigs is because (Official Answer) it was getting a bit hardcore playing in the support band and the headline band on the same night and Rubella Ballet had more gigs and was the band I started before I joined Flux....................in the photo section there are rare photos of me playing for Flux sent to me by Neil one of Flux’s first guitarists. THIS THE GIG WHERE I LEPT OFF STAGE FOR A PISS HALF WAY THROUGH FLUX'S SET, I REMEMBER PULLING THE CHAIN AND THE CROWD CHEERING AS I RAN OUT AND DIVED ONTO THE STAGE TO LAUNCH INTO TUBE DISASTER, SICK BUTCHERS AND BACKGROUND TO MALFUNCTION WHICH THEY PLAYED AT THE FEEDING OF THE 5000 SHOW WHICH WAS AWESOME..... ....................
