KEIN KIEL
Post-Punk & No Wave
Music Scene in Kiel 1977-1982
Exhibition Kunsthalle zu Kiel
06.05. - 03.06.2007
Stimulated by the British Punk movement, encouraged and inspired by the
scene in Hamburg, Berlin and Düsseldorf, a group of "naughties" in Kiel
began in 1977 to go their own musical way.
Punk bumped into Avantgarde, Rockabilly into New Wave, No Wave into Glam,
handmade into electronic, polical into apolitical, amateurs into professionals.
The exibition documents the emergence and development of the music scene
in Kiel and portrays the "Lebensgefühl" of the protagonists.
"Kein Kiel" was the title of the first cassette sampler of bands in Kiel
in 1980.
That the title was a direct allusion to to the cult sampler "No New York"
produced by Brian Eno expresses the self-irony and self-confidence of the
scene.
It is exciting to see what was possible in this phase between 1977 and 1982
and the lusty joy for experiments and spunky, cheerful abandon with which
the bands staged themselves.
With the aid of numerous display objects and space and sound installations,
"Kein Kiel" draws an atmospheric portrait of the "underground" in Kiel in
the late 70s and early 80s. The exhibition assembles authentically the multifarious
expressions of this noise culture consisting of music, signs and language.
The photographic part of the exhibition is largely the contribution of the
photographer Helmut Kunde, who was the chronicler of the scene at that time.
In addtion, Joachim Thode presents from the collection of the Kunsthalle
the photo series "Kulturlandschaften", "Kieler Stadtansichten", und "Kieler
Bunker" which reflect the atmosphere in Kiel in the 70s.
The catalogue of the exhibition contains an audio-CD with the original recordings
of 15 bands in Kiel from the years 1978 - 1982. Beginning with the Proto-Punk
band "No Horizon", who in 1979 released the first record, on to "No More",
whose song "Suicide Commando" has meanwhile become an underground classic,
and as far as the Artschool-Punk of "Fun Funeral" and the experimental music
of Devantgarde" and "D-Mark", the whole spectrum of the scene is presented.
