Band Members:I decided to focus on my love of music from all over the World on this page. As I had mentioned on my other page, I grew up hearing all kinds of music. I thank my Parents for exposing me to just about every kind of music there is. From Harry Belafonte's History of Prison Blues to the smooth vocal stylings of Joe Williams. Henry Mancini's "Pink Panther to Mahalia Jackson. I love it all.
I've always loved "What a Wonderful World". It's an amazing song. I only hope I do Mr. Armstrong justice in singing it. I fell in love with Cesaria Evora in the mid 90's, she is amazing, magical, her voice and style is just enchanting.
I wrote the last song on my player - Vida Buena - after the death of my dear friend Estrallita Overstreet. I met her while we were both working with urban youth in the California Bay Area. Having immigrated from Little Rock Arkansas, she had been studying metaphysics for years. Watching her work with families in crisis taught me the true meaning of compassion, respect and the acknowledgement of the dignity of all people. She was always able to see the good in all, the lesson to be learned when faced with adversity and above all - there is always time for chocolate mousse.
Influences: I started out playing piano at seven years old, violin at eight, guitar at 14. I remember sitting on the floor with my ear glued to my Parents stereo console listening to Mantovanti, Pappa Earl Hines, Mancini, Ahmad Jamal, Miriam Makeba, Jackie Gleason's Orchestra, any and all Bossa Nova, Sam Cook, Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan, Odetta. Carmen McRae, Hugh Masakela, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahailia Jackson.
By the time I reached high school I was listening to;
Nina Simone, Laura Nero, Aretha Franklin, Joanie Mitchell, Roberta Flack, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Rita Coolidge, Melvin Van Peebles (Lilly does the va-amp-po-ugie), Jose Feliciano, Bonnie Raitt, The Chambers Brothers, Bob Marley, BB King, Peter Tosh.
Randy Newman, Leon Russell, Jackson Brown, Harry Belafonte, Bobby Blue Bland, David Bromberg, Mark Almond, Jessie Collin Young. Linda Tillery, It's a Beautiful Day. Jimmi Hendrix, Joe Baker and Elvin Bishop, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal and Los Lobos. Al Jerreau, Steely Dan, Tracy Nelson (the original one) Lidia Pence. Chicago, Jimmy Cliff, Carlos Santana. Shaka Chan, Sly and the Family Stone.
And this last decade I have enjoyed the music of Les Nubians, Los Lonely Boys, Ulali, Ozo Motely, Aster Aweke, Rokia Traore, Bobi Cespedes, Buena Vista Social Club. And many more. One of the things I'm starting to love about MySpace is having access to a whole word of music again.I love it all. Baily Rae, Ben Harper, Habib Koite', Bjork, Talvin Singh, UNKLE, Mana, B - Side Players, SRV, Eagle-Eye Cherry, Peter Gabriel, NIN, Aqualung, Radiohead, Portis Head, Bob Marley, Gill Scott Heron, Jill Scott, Marvin Gaye, DJ Shadow, Cesaria Evora, Henri Dikongue
