About Me

We all know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, because there are pink ribbons everywhere. However, not many Americans know that November is Lung Cancer Awareness month. Even though lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States, it is not as visible and that is most evident when you learn that the color of the ribbon for lung cancer is clear. There is a reason for the lack of color; it represents the fact that it is a silent killer. More Americans die from lung cancer each year, than from breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers combined. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, causing approximately 30% of all cancer related deaths. This disease does not discriminate. It is the leading cancer killer among Caucasians, African-Americans, Asians and Hispanics, whether they are women or men. Over 85% of people who are diagnosed with lung cancer are diagnosed in the late stages of the disease. Only 15% of lung-cancer patients survive more than five years. Funding for research is significantly out of proportion to its deadliness. One reason is that there are very few survivors of this disease who can effectively lobby to increase federal funding. The other reason is that there is a stigma attached to lung cancer. Many believe that those who are diagnosed with this disease “asked for it” by smoking. That stigma may be one reason why the federal government spent less money per each lung cancer death this year on research, compared to other cancer deaths. The reality is that lung cancer affects even those who have never smoked, with 10%-15% of those diagnosed with the disease never having one cigarette. Given the facts associated with lung cancer, federal funding for lung cancer research is significantly too low, and those who control the federal purse strings have not done enough about it. We need to encourage our legislators to increase federal funding for lung cancer research, so that lung cancer suffering and death can be eliminated. The purpose of this page is twofold: 1. To increase awareness and provide information about this disease; and 2. to alert the public to events that will raise money for research. We can begin to encourage the federal government by example. We must all do our part to increase awareness!!! Whether you participate in a walk to raise money, write a Letter to the Editor of your hometown newspaper, or personally visit or write your representative, you are playing a part!

My Interests

..

I'd like to meet:

In February 2004, this silent killer touched my life. My mother at the very young age of 46 was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer, stage IIIb. She showed no symptoms of the disease, until that date. On December 30, 2004, 10 months after being diagnosed, she passed away. The reality is that my story is not uncommon.I'd like to meet people whose lives have been touched by lung cancer. Please feel free to leave stories and pictures of those who have dealt with this disease.
