I started buying records at the tender age of 10. Bands like Mud and Sweet were on my turntables (well my dad's actually) in those days. Started to hang out with best friend Mikey when 13 and fortunately he had a better music taste that slowly rubbed off on me.Started listening to Greg Edwards on Capital Radio around that time and made my 1st serious LP purchase - Platinum Hook's debut LP on Motown. Although I loved the tune "Standing On The Verge" it was the soulful "Gotta Find A Woman" that did it for me (And it still does to this day) Slough was close enough to London to be able to pick up some of the pirate stations that were starting up.
Began listening to and taping Invicta, SOLAR, and getting to know the music of Gilles Peterson and Co. Started attending the all days/all nighters that were happening around Slough and the south. I remember one in particular on a cold Easter weekend in Bournemouth where Froggy mixed the first few bars of "Don't Let Love Get You Down" over and over again. Listened to all the classic radio shows over the years; Robbie Vincent (especially his monthly Jazz Funk 40), Pete Tong, Tim Westwood, Gilles, Patrick Forge, Chris Phillips and Jez Nelson on JazzFM, Norman Jay, David Rodigan, Barry Stone on a station out of Reading I think?? Charlie Gillit, Andy Kershaw, John Peel, Terry Wogan, Jeff Young, Graham Gold, Roger Scott, Humphry Littleton, Helen Mayhue, Peter Young and others too numerous to mention. Loved some of the club only DJs too like Chris Brown (Frenchies in Camberly was the bomb), Chris Hill, Sean French (what a nutter!!!), Gary Dennis, Snowboy, Bob Jones to name but a few Got jazzy somewhere around 1979 and was always the one in the crew with the made up mix tapes.Joined Ronnie Scotts club when 18 years old and saw THE GREATEST jazz musicians in THE GREATEST jazz club in the world. And what about those other clubs; The Wag, Belvedere Arms, Frenchies, Valbone (Maidenhead), Safari Club (Windsor Safari Park), DDC (Windsor and Chalfont), Electric Ballroom, Dingwalls (Sunday afternoons at Dingwalls as Mark Murphy says), The Fridge, The Bulls Head (in Barnes), 100 Club ahhh man so many good (drunken) old times. And those Weekenders too – always in the jazz rooms.Moved to Manchester in 1992 where Northern Soul caught up with me. Used to listen to Sunset Radio up there and go to Parkers Hotel every month for the best soul night in the country. Bought compilations by Richard Serling and visited the legendary Wigan Pier out of respect. Great times and music up in Manchester around that time. Mike Chadwick had a great show on Sunset Radio and a great record shop in Piccadilly. I first moved to New Zealand in 1994 and again in 1997.
