About Me

A FEW WORDS ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ****************************** "definitely the next best of guitarist/writer since Joni Mitchell, pop expressionist, the early one." Dick Crockett, 88.1 "The Voice", Sacramento ************************************************************ ************************************************************ **************************** "MARKLEY HAS MORE DEPTH, CONTROL AND BEAUTY TO HER VOICE IN A LIVE CONCERT SETTING THAN MOST SINGERS GET IN A STUDIO." --Paul Slavens, KERA Dallas ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ****************************** "Like the female version of Mose Allison!" --Sue Auclair ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ***************************** "MARKLEY'S VOICE IS INSTANTLY RECOGNIZABLE." --HOUSTON MUSIC NEWS ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ****************************** BIO: Lisa was born a three-and-a-half pound Capricorn with a set of lungs. She is a survivor of the University of North Texas where she played trombone in the lab bands, sang in the Jazz Singers, skipped out on music history classes, composed suitably atonal pieces for an assortment of instruments, and crashed the hard-drive on the Synclavier (many times). She graduated, and has since paid off all her student loans. ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ****************************** Lisa performs locally with her jazz trio (standards etc, "sans banjo"), and tours as "Markley and Balmer" with Bruce Balmer sharing their originals. She also tours internationally in the geographically challenged trio The Malvinas. ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ****************************** Her solo projects include Goddess of Groove, (an acoustic album of originals released in 2000), and her jazz release The Sky is Blue and Sometimes Cries (jazz-based originals, a sprinkling of standards, and other songs that should be standards). Featuring a host of friends from the University of North Texas, including the Grammy award-winning Jeffrey Barnes (of Brave Combo) on assorted woodwinds. ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ****************************** A FEW MORE WORDS ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ****************************** “The Sky is Blue and Sometimes Cries” is an enchanting CD by an artist who deserves to be better known …. The key instrument is Ms. Markley’s lovely, understated voice -- which fits jazz ballads and Latin-tinged folk tunes perfectly." --Thor Christensen, Dallas Morning News******************************************************* ************************************************************ *** "Simultaneously pensive and playful, Lisa Markley's mellow The Sky is Blue and Sometimes Cries is as seductive as a fine glass of wine sipped sometime after midnight in a quiet, favorite bar" --Buddy Magazine ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ****************************** AWARDS & ACCOLADES /// 2007--"TWIRLIE" AWARD (FEMALE JAZZ VOCALIST)--Dick Crockett, 88.1-The Voice ///...... 2007--NUMBER ONE TEXAS INDEPENDENT RELEASE (The sky is blue and sometimes cries), Buddy Magazine ///...... 2004--TOP TEN (8) TEXAS INDEPENDENT RELEASE (Live at Gloria Dei Nights), Buddy Magazine ///...... 2001, 2004 and 2006--REGIONAL SONGWRITER--Kerrville Folk Festival ///...... 2000--B.W.
