Hip Hop is a cultural movement that began among African American community in the South Bronx in the late 1970s. Portions of the culture began spreading into the mainstream during the early 1980s, and by the 1990s, hip hop culture had spread all over the world. This page is dedicated to those who who came first and helped turn Hip Hop and Rap into what it is today.
The movement is said to have begun with the work of the likes of DJ Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa, though the word "Hip-Hop" is believed to have been first used in the song "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang, though some give credit to Cowboy (Keith Wiggins) of Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five who it is said while teasing a friend who had just joined the US Army, by scat singing the words "hip/hop/hip/hop" in a way that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of marching soldiers. There will always be diferent opinions on where the term Hip Hop came from, but non the less it had arrived.
