Born in New York City on May 29, 1952, Hilton Ruiz spent his first two decades mastering both classical and jazz piano. By the age of 20, he had worked with Frank Foster, Mary Lou Williams, Joe Newman, Cal Massey, Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson and performed on television and at Carnegie Hall. Recognized as one of the premier Latin Jazz pianists and a master of improvisation at the keys, Hilton was soon sought out by Tito Puente and established a relationship with the venerable musician that would last until Puente passed in the year 2000. In tribute to “his boy”, Ruiz envisioned the creation of an album that would combine original works communicating the spirit of Tito with a collection of the tracks they loved performing most. Working with Ruiz and the all-star cast of Grammy Award winning artists and engineers who had supported Puente throughout his career, M27 undertook the production of “Steppin' with T.P.” in 2004. The resulting album, the only Puente tribute sanctioned by the artists family, captures the heart of Latin Jazz and the Soul of its King.In 2005, Steppin' with T.P. saw a regional release in Puerto Rico which immediately rose to 1 in the Latin Jazz charts. In 2006, Hilton Ruiz prepared a world tour to commence in the fall with the release of “Steppin' with T.P.” the documentary film. Following the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, Hilton Ruiz took action by dedicating a visual recording entitled “Goin' Back to New Orleans” in dedication to his favorite city, New Orleans.
On June 6th 2006, the world lost a great talent and friend.
In memory of the Latin jazz giant, we honor Hilton Ruiz, his music and everything he stood for….”positive vibrations.”
