I can go past third position... (oooh!)

About Me

I'm a freelance violinist and a member of the Local 47 Musicians Union.
MY CLASSICAL MUSIC BACKGROUND:
I've been playing the violin since age 5, and I've studied with faculty at the Hartt School of Music and the Yale School of Music. I was principal second of the Yale Symphony Orchestra, Concertmaster of the Detroit Civic Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the Santa Monica Symphony. My favorite violin memory is when I performed the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Greater Hartford Youth Orchestra during our summer tour of China when I was in high school. Today, I perform regularly in chamber music recitals in the LA area. Recent performances include Dvorak's Romance in A, Mendelssohn's Piano Trio No. 1, and Brahms' Piano Trio No. 1. I've also done movie soundtrack and commercial recordings (Hellraiser V: Bloodline, American Airlines, etc.). I also teach part-time violin - I have been involved with the wonderful non-profit organization "Rainbow Academy" which provides lessons for underprivileged children in LA. Recent classical gigs include chamber music recitals with friends and the Los Angeles Chamber Music Players.
ROCK/OTHER MUSIC SPECIALTIES (Rock, Country, Celtic & Scottish fiddle):
I also play regularly with many rock bands. I had the honor of playing with Arthur Lee of Love during his sold-out headlining show at the House of Blues in LA (2003) and also went on tour with Lee/Love (2003). I've also played and recorded with such critically acclaimed artists as Anne McCue, Oscar-nominated Bird York, The Dilettantes, The Now People, and Bright Blue Gorilla. I was in a band recently called Random AOK (check out our myspace band page at www.myspace.com/randomaofk). Recent gigs include shows with Listing Ship, Kissing Cousins, Wait Think Fast, Emma Burgess, and Buck McCoy.
I also play Celtic and Scottish fiddle. I've performed with the Scottish Fiddlers of LA at the Encino Folk Festival and I was a member of the Celtic Arts Center. I am new to jazz music but so far, I've had a lot of fun rehearsing/recording with various jazz-type projects, too. I also have started doing some country fiddle gigs, yee haw!
MY GEAR:
I own a beautiful violin from 1905 by French violinmaker Maxim Angard, a 1902 Thomas Knox violin, and a cool Fender electric violin! My gear includes a Fender Blues Jr. amp, tons of BOSS effects pedals, and a Fishman pickup. I also play guitar and own a beautiful Daisy Rock "Venus" electric guitar.
ETC.:
By day, I'm a professional writer. You can check out my other page at http://myspace.com/paulayoo

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: I have had the honor of playing and/or recording with the following cool musicians: the amazing Arthur Lee of Love (including Arthur Lee & Johnny Echols and the members of Baby Lemonade - Mike Randle, Rusty Squeezebox, Dave Chapple, and Davd Daddyo Greene and the orchestra of Probyn Gregory, Dan Clucas, Heather Lockie, Ana Vale Lenchantin, Julie Carpenter & Carrie Bartsch); the delightful and funny husband-and-wife duo Michael Glover & Robyn Rosenkrantz of Bright Blue Gorilla; the amazing Anne McCue; the brilliant and Oscar-nominated songwriter Bird York; the hip The Now People; the cool chicks 'n guys of Listing Ship; the adorable ladies of Kissing Cousins; the psychedelic Dilettantes; the lovely Emma Burgess; the eclective W.A.C.O. orchestra; the haunting Wait Think Fast; the talented Buck McCoy; and the awesome dudes of Random AOK. Hopefully one day I'll also play with YOU!
Influences: Bartok, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Stravinsky (okay, so I'm really into the Eastern Bloc composers), Mahler, Brahms, Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Sarasate, St. Saens, Debussy, Ravel, Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Beethoven, Duran Duran (no, I'm not kidding!), XTC, Tool, Helmet, nine inch nails, ABBA, The Jam, The Cramps, Gary Numan, The Furors, Jesus & Mary Chain, Journey (again, no, I'm not kidding!), Led Zeppelin, Let's Active, REM, Salem 66, Dumptruck, Tears for Fears, Arthur Lee & Love, Los Lobos, Lush, Madness, Pat Benatar, Heart (well, anything BEFORE 1984), Pink Floyd (I know, I'm getting predictable with this list), The Pretenders (first album), Radiohead, Regina Carter, The Who (Quadrophenia), Seal, Sex Pistols, The Smiths, Sonic Youth (okay, I'm obviously now just going down my list of songs alphabetically on my iTunes), Stephane Grapelli, T. Rex, Talk Talk, The Toadies, Tori Amos (I know, I'm shameless), Tribe, U2, and did I mention Duran Duran? Basically my musical tastes are all over the map which means I have so many influences that I myself sound like nobody except myself!
Sounds Like: Viktoria Mullova meets Nadja Salerno Sonnenberg meets Itzhak Perlman. (Correction: IN MY DREAMS!!! In reality, I play in tune, I stay in tempo, and my vibrato is tasteful. hee! :D)
