I am a singer/vocalist, composer, lyricist; lover of music, expression, communication, the sounds the voice can make; I love language and its possibilities, songs, stories and poetry, improvisation, taking risks, tenderness. Energy, surprise, emotion. Always playing around with my voice, always making noises...
as a kid, I sang in the choir, wanted (when I was little) to play the trumpet - we didn’t have one but did have my grandfather’s violin. So the violin it was, for years; then, I jobbed during school holidays to get a piano. Was fascinated by jazz but couldn’t get in touch till much later... loved those singer-songwriters, taught myself some guitar, wrote my first songs at 14. After school, I started studying classical singing in Vienna, found out that that wasn’t my world, went back to Germany, to Bonn where I studied literature at the university, spent nights at my Wurlitzer electric piano and went to all the jazz jam sessions at the local club, sang in my first jazz bands and then went to study Jazz singing at the Amsterdamse Hogeschool for de kunsten in Hilversum/Amsterdam, Holland, with Deborah Brown et al.
I am proud to have worked with the likes of Gunter Hampel (a long-standing collaboration), Lajos Dudas, Axel Doerner, Nils Wogram, Perry Robinson, Smudo, Jerry van Rooyen (and the WDR Bigband), the WDR (radio network) studio for sound design and many more. At present, I have two main projects: my band hartkamp (featuring Bernd Kaftan, piano, bassist André Nendza and Fritz Wittek on drums) where we play my own songs, in german language (our second CD is called „glücklich“, the third one is under construction) and the Magnolia & van Endert Duo with guitarist Philipp van Endert – our first CD "Humpty's Amazing Boogie Pencil" has been released this spring to great reviews...
