About Me


1980 I was born in Rottweil.
1989 First saxophonlessons in the Musicschool Rottweil.
1995 Now intensive Jazzsaxophon lessons with Arno Haas (www.myspace.com/arnohaas).
1997 I participated in the Internationl Saxophon Seminar Marktoberdorf with Lee Konitz, James Moody, Roman Schwaller und Jürgen Seefelder.
1999 I played leadalto in the Landesjazz Orchester Baden Würtemberg which is led by Bernd Konrad. Concerts at the Jazzfest Rottweil with Matthias Bergmann, German Klaiber and Arno Haas. Pricewinner in the contest „Jugend Jazzt“ with the Saxophonquartett Saxappeal.
2000 Soloist in the Landesjazz Orchestera Baden Wuerttemberg in a production of the SWR- television with Randy Brecker. In this projekt Buster Cooper and Mark Soskin are guests of the orchestera as well. Recording of the Cd „Fever“ with Annika Neipp. Altoplayer in the Late Eight Band of Klaus Graf.
2001 I started my Jazzsaxophon studies at the Hochschule Nürnberg with Klaus Graf, Steffen Schorn and Hubert Winter. Tour with the Landesjazz Orchestera Baden Wuertemberg through Asia. The Band played in Kambodcha, Laos, Vietnam and Malaysia. Leadalto in the Landesjazz Orchestera of Bavaria. Concerts with the Daimler – Chrysler Big Band.
2002 Studies with Ferdinand Povel at the Conservatory van Amsterdam. Concerts in the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. Lessons with Dick Oatts ( Altoplayer in the Mel Lewis Thad Jones Big Band ) Concerts with Klaus Graf, Nils Wogram, Elmar Frey, Arno Haas and Stephan Holstein in the Alte Paketpost in Rottweil.
2003 Recording of a Quartett – Cd. I Entered the Bundesjazz Orchester which is led by Peter Herbolzheimer and continued my studies at the Musikhochschule Köln. Lessons with Heiner Wiberny and Claudius Valk. The Magnus Mehl 7tett interprets the musical Citytheme of Rottweil ( Jazzversion ) for the „Heimattage Baden Würtemberg“ ( SWR-television ). Concert at Bundesnachwuchs Jazzfestival Leipzig.
2004 Now leadaltoplayer and soloist of the Jazzorchester NRW. Tour through Middleamerika. Big Band and Combo Concerts in Panama, Honduras, Nicaragua, San Salvador und Costa Rica. Altsaxplayer in a WDR Production with the Landesjugend Orchester NRW ( Jazz meets Klassik ). Concerts at the Cologne Jazz Night. Tour through Germany with the Magnus Mehl Quartett feat. the New Yorker Saxophonplayer Jake Saslow (www.myspace.com/jakesaslow).
2005 Leadaltoplayer and Soloist on the Jubileetour: 30 years Landesjazz Orchestera NRW with Paquito de Riviera, Frank Chastenier and the actress Katja Riemann. Bandleader and artistic Director of the Wednesday Night Big Band (Cologne) which played Projects with Frank Reinshagen, Steffen Schorn etc.
2006 the Magnus Mehl Quintett wins the International Jazz Contest in Getxo ( Bilbao / Spain ). As the winner of the contest the group performes on the Getxo Jazzfestival twice. One night they share the stage with Eddie Palmieri and his Afro – Carribean All – Stars and and on the other concert the quintett performes with the Billy Cobham – Lockwood String Quartett. A Live – CD of the Magnus Mehl Quintett has been recorded during the festival and was released in December 2006. Another great success for the band was the 2nd Price at the 28th International Hoilaart Jazzcontest in Belgium in September 2006. The Wednesday Night Big Band records the music of Heiner Schmitz and a „Big Band meets Prince“ programm.
2007 Magnus Mehl is finalist in the “European Yamaha Sax Contest” Magnus Mehl gets a full DAAD scholarship to live and study saxophon in New York City (for 9 months).
