Shamisen for concert stage and the Kabuki Theatre

About Me

In 1995 I attended an incredible performance in Boulder, Colorado, by Yoko Hiraoka on koto. I was fascinated, and I studied koto with her (sadly only for a few short months) before relocating to Seattle, yet I was able to continue studying music with Sensei Mary Ohno on shamisen.

The shamisen style for which this space is devoted, is Naga-uta (or long song) that first developed as music to accompany the Kabuki Theatre and later as music for concert performances. Mary Ohno also writes arranges her own music such as Shamisen Fantasy, heard on the film My Lucy Charm .

In Seattle and Tacoma , Sensei Mary Ohno . teaches the arts related to traditional Japanese arts including Naga-uta shamisen and vocals, Kabuki style dancing, kimono wear, theatrical make-up, manners and history related to traditional Japanese music and dance. Please check this page for various upcoming performances.
