About Me

I began studying koto in Sapporo in 1979, and it has been the driving force of my life ever since. I have been very lucky, with incredible teachers (Sawai Kazue, Sawai Tadao and Nagane Utayumi) and support along the way. As Kazue-sensei says, "Koto is a Great Instrument."
See what you think. (Video: Sawai Tadao's "Habataki" (Take Flight), performed 10/19 in Seattle)

I founded the Koto World label in 2000 and now have 14 titles. There are music titles (Duo En CDs of koto and shakuhachi music; I also have koto solos and collaborations with singers Aiko Shimada and Mako) and storytelling titles (five CDs, many of them winners of national awards from Parents' Choice, NAPPA, iParenting Media Award and Children's Web). My label offers "Japanese music and stories to nourish and inspire."

Sounds Like: Sounds like water: waves, rain, snow, waterfall. Sounds like thoughts: yearning, joy, regret, hope, frustration, nostolgia. Sounds like dreams: flying, floating, freeing. Sounds like colors: dark purple, silken white, astounding crimson. Sounds like flowers: solemn chrysanthemums, carefree daisies, romantic roses, dancing sunflowers and an amaryllis bursting with strength. Sounds like something from deep in your heart that beats with you as you walk through life.
