BiP_HOp

contemporary acoustic meets digitalia

About Me

BiP_HOp is a webzine, a radio show, organizing live events, and above all a label documenting the state of electronic art and sound design, unconventional sound adventures, contemporary electronica meet acoustica, modern ambient, minimal techno that is challenging the ears and the mind. Our goal is to avoid categorization, not to fall in a daily routine issuing "everytime the same album", we hope to surprise our listeners. We try to promote them and give to their music some of the recognition it deserves. We do our label out of passion, running a label is our way to share our passion for some musics. We respect people buying our records (don't we share the same interest for good music ?) and try to propose honest prices, good quality & beautifully packaged music. That is challenging the ears and the mind. Our goal is to avoid categorization, not to fall in a daily routine issuing "everytime the same album", we hope to surprise our listeners.

LEO ABRAHAMS : scene memory [bleep 33] A series of contemporary textural studies for the electric guitar. Moody and atmospheric; broodingly melancholic yet melodic; radical but accessible. An air of tension is maintained even throughout the most static and bucolic pieces. Leo Abrahams is also playing with with Brian Eno (appearing on several albums), Ed Harcourt with whom he has toured and recorded for 6 years, and film composer David Holmes (Oceans 12 and Code 46).

SELECTED REVIEWS : an evocative, cinematic, tour-de-force. Essential listening. KULTUREFLASH 175 / UK Abrahams blends piano, guitar and electronics to an almost euphoric effect, the record feels like you are walking in a dream. BOOMKAT / UKClick on the art cover

Erik Friedlander and Teho Teardo : giorni rubati [bleep 34]

www.erikfriedlander.comwww.tehoteardo.comInspired from pasolini's poetry, in 2004 Italian electronics composer Teho Teardo and New York cellist Erik Friedlander began a trans- Atlantic collaboration, exchanging ideas, creating and remixing each other's contributions. They discovered a rapport that superseded their different backgrounds. The classically trained cellist now Downtown improviser and former electro punk now cutting edge film composer found they shared a drive to create emotionally charged, passionate music. Friedlander has backed John Zorn, Laurie Anderson and Courtney Love. New York's Erik Friedlander is a unique cellist whose work blurs genre borders. He is a composer and an improviser, a classical musician and a jazzbo. The LA Times put it best when they wrote, "Friedlander's performance clearly positions him as the first potential star performer on his instrument."Teho has started the bands Meathead, MATERA (with Mick Harris), OPERATOR (with Scott Mccloud/GVSB) and MODERN INSTITUTE

Band Members: RELEASED IN MAY 2007:Spaceheads & Max Eastley : a very long way from anywhere else [bleep 35]Spaceheads are a unique duo of trumpet (Andy Diagram) played through electronics and looped with drums (Richard Harrison). Max Eastley is a sound sculptor, artist, and musician who plays an instrument he invented and made himself called The Arc. It is a monochord of wood and wire, which is scraped, bent and flexed into an orbit of amplified effects. This new CD was recorded live, improving at two very different locations, one an island of the south of France during Mimi festival, and the other a remote village on the North Yorkshire moors, both venues a very long way from anywhere else."A fascinating meeting of surreal improv strategies and electronic abstraction, A Very Long Way From Anywhere Else, is, as the title suggests, a pretty unique piece of work. Recommended." BOOMKAT / UKRothko : eleven stages of intervention [bleep 36]Following releases on such visionary labels as Lo Recordings, Simon Raymonde’s Bella Union, Too Pure and Kraak, Bip_Hop is pleased to welcome the release of Rothko's new album. Mark Beazley (bass), Michael Donnelly (bass), Ben Page (keyboards/percussion) and Tom Page (drums) continue to create a warm and inviting sound, where solitary keyboard melodies transition from exploratory passages and fragile beauty intertwines effortlessly through somber basslines. The music of Rothko at equal turns challenges and comforts the listener. At first perhaps confrontational, yet ultimately nurturing, the band's eleventh fulllength release -- adds to Rothko's already innovative and impressive catalogue."It’s like a more melancholy, more muted Godspeed You! Black Emperor, without the hint of post-rock cliché, or at times even like Southern Lord’s slow rockers Earth without the metallic subtext – this is cinematic and evocative music in the best possible way... Quite hauntingly beautiful… recommended!" BOOMKAT / UKROTHKO video: Check out this video: rothko - give everything
