GEDLEY BRAGA: POSTHUMOUS WORK INSTALLATION [SLIDE SHOW]: GABINETE DE ARTE RAQUEL ARNAUD - SAO PAULO - BRAZIL - 2008:
Gedley Braga works as a contemporary artist and a composer since 1986, when he did his first multimedia performance in his hometown - Divinopolis - state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
In those times he had a group (called MORAL) with some friends of the Fine Arts School, in Belo Horizonte (where he took his Bachelor degree in Painting in 1988).
In the same city (Belo Horizonte) and University (UFMG), he became Specialist in Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art (1992).
Between 1992 and 1994 he was in a band called "Os Habitantes" (with Claudio Jose de Oliveira and Rodrigo Fonseca). This band recorded a "never released CD" in 1994 (the band stopped their activities before).
Since 1997 he lives and works in Sao Paulo, Brazil. For nine years (November of 1997 until December of 2006), he worked as conservator and retorer of the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology of the University of Sao Paulo.
After a Master degree in Science of Communication [ECA/USP - 2003] he took the PhD on Science of Information in the School of Communication and Arts of the University of Sao Paulo [ECA / USP - 2008].
LOVE & HATE Installation was his first solo exhibition in Sao Paulo. It happened in February of 2005 in the Gabinete de Arte Raquel Arnaud, one of the most important contemporary art gallery in Brazil.
He began to work with music again since he met a new friend, Lina de Albuquerque, in october of 2005, when both were working in Belem, north of Brazil and were introduced by a friend called Alegria Benchimol ("Alegria" in portuguese means "happiness").
They discovered, in the Amazon rainforest that they are neighboors in Sao Paulo.
After this meeting, they began to work together composing a lot of songs. Now they have some projects: LAVADEIRAS, COSTUREIRAS and MISTY & LAVADEIRAS to show their own songs (you can see the links on the "TOP FRIENDS").
It was only in the end of 2006 that Gedley Braga took courage to show his solo work as a composer trying to sing and using some advantages of the computer world and the recent access to the "home studio" technology. All the songs here are just "demo" versions and they were writen, arranged and produced in a bedroom studio without acoustic isolation or assistance of any professional sound engineer. The equipment is the chepeast one available on the market. It is the "do it yourself" philosophy.
After 3 years since his last solo exhibition in Sao Paulo, Gedley Braga has exhibited his new installation “Posthumous Work†in Raquel Arnaud Gallery [Gabinete de Arte Raquel Arnaud – Sao Paulo – Brazil – February 9th until March 01st 2008]. Divided in three parts [“Vanishing Pointâ€, “All that Jazz†and “Apocalypseâ€], this installation is based on the discussions in his PhD Thesis: “The Thesis in [of] the Black Box†that exemplifies the literality role within the formal and informal art systems in order to have a consistency between the symbolic origin of language and the variations that appear in “repetition†[“differance†– term used by Derrida]. All of these discussions are presented according the “event law†[also in Jacques Derrida’s philosophy perspective] and the retrospective power of archival device or a “scriptureâ€.
