About Me

Dorothy Sabiston was born on April 26, 1903 in Birmingham Alabama. For Dorothy, getting to Hollywood would be via New York City. Her first venture in New York was a fashion show. After doing that for about two weeks Dorothy decided it was time to move on to theatre. She went to a casting call for George White's "Scandals" a musical revue and got a job that day. Even though the casting was closed, supposedly, it was her thick Southern accent and determination that caught George White's attention. She also got a nickname from him that stuck with her throughout her career - "Alabam"George White's Scandals ran from June 30, 1924 to December 13, 1924 and Dorothy was part of the opening night cast. The costumes worn by the girls were very risqué thus the title of the show. Along with Dorothy, the 1924 cast of Scandals included Dolores Costello, Winnie Lightner and Louise Brooks who grew very fond of Dorothy and the two became friends.Dorothy was married 3 times. The first marriage was in 1920 and that marriage ended in divorce in 1924. Her second marriage was to fellow actor William Boyd. They met while filming 'His First Command' in 1929 and then worked together again in another movie in 1930. Bill and Dorothy were married in Nevada on December 19, 1930 but that marriage also ended in divorce in May 1936. Her third marriage came in 1946 when she said "I do" to Herman Shapiro and they remained married until her death from cancer in 1957.According to articles from the 20's and 30's, Dorothy was described as being 5' 3 tall, weighing between 105 and 117 pounds, having brown curly hair and brown eyes.
