About Me

It’s her voice that jumps out at you… Brodie makes a clear, direct hit and seduces you with a bit of smoky overtone. She has a beautiful, clear voice and communicates so very well, the honesty & emotion of her down to earth lyrics. Her refreshingly peaceful and sensual personality pours out and lathers the soul with the mood of each song, leaving a clean finish and plenty of imagination for those who appreciate a heartfelt songwriter's work… she has re-invented and confirmed that the days of the confessional singer are far from over!Brodie Dawson was born in Hamilton-Ontario, and grew up at first, unaware of the magnitude of those musical seeds developing within her…most likely planted there by her father Brent Dawson a successful blues musician. These seeds cultivated carefully over time, began to blossom. Being immersed in a life of music, she began to absorb this incredible energy that would soon be transformed into her own magical style. It was at age 19 that she began migrating west and with this, embarked on what would be a well-travelled journey of finding her way and searching for a new beginning. She made her way to Vancouver Island, B.C. and would call this home for a few years. Here she picked up the guitar and devoted herself to the music within her.
It wasn’t long after that she began to realize with a growing clarity, what those seeds within her had become. This clarity shined brightly when she first performed live in 2000 opening up for Juno Award Winner- Ray Bonneville at a small and intimate venue in Campbell River. Here it was apparent to all of those privileged to attend, that she had certainly found and carved-out her place in musical expressiveness…this girl could sing! She began complimenting various other artists with her silky-smooth tones including local singer Doug Folkins’ CD which she graced with her alluring backups. Brodie then released a video for the single ‘Backwards Kinda Girl” which won ‘Best Music Video’ in the Canadian International Annual Film and Video festival 2001.
Playing this small mill town would not be enough to satisfy Brodie’s ‘Inner Gypsy’ and she and her partner Roger Myre, made their way back east to Montreal and continued as an acoustic duo to wow audiences all over ‘sin city’. Soon after, she drenched herself with all that this creative mecca would offer her, cultivating some of her most exciting collaborations with local artists. One of which was a choir group known as ‘Out Of The Mouths Of Babes’, well known on the Montreal scene. Brodie began polishing her skills as she graced the stages of such venues as ‘Honey Martin’s’ and ‘Brutopia’ to a welcomed success…she was turning heads. The pair began recording originals, some of which are found on her soon to be released CD.Restless and seeking change, she turned north…as far north as her faithful van ‘Ruby’ would allow. She ended up in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and her decision to settle there would prove to be an amazing one. New in town-yet true to form, Brodie managed to find the one and only remaining ‘shack’ to reside in…one room on the lake, no running water and wood heat, it was perfect. Not long after she was the catalyst in forming an all girl group affectionately called - ‘Brodie Dawson and The Woodyard Crew’. This combination was electric and fresh as the girls fell naturally into place amongst a community of amazing musicians.
Performing around town at events such as the ‘Kool Aid’ benefit concert for victims of the tsunami and ‘Bushed’, The Cabin Fever Festival. Brodie was quickly becoming a sensation not to be missed. In 2005 The Woodyard Crew performed at the ‘Folk On The Rocks’ Festival. And again this year Brodie was asked to perform at the festival as a solo act and was accompanied by two former band mates, Jen Walden on bass, and Azure Degrow on percussion. Brodie was also a guest on CBC Radio's The Vinyl Cafe with with Stuart McLean in June of this year. Here she mesmerized the crowd with her sweet, seamless vocals and hypnotic stage presence.Brodie calls her style a mix of soulful ‘folky’ blues with a twist of pop and a twang of old-school country. True to all those genres she sings of life, love, searching and finding your way. Her vocals are strong, confident, easy and soothing to listen to. Brodie’s appetite for the flavours of such artists as Patsy Cline, Bonnie Raitt and k.d. Lang can be tasted as her stories make their way across your pallette served up hot, smooth and rich on her own plate of originality. Tracks like “Funny” and “Day Of Thanks”, catch you at the door as the first notes of her voice seem to wrap you in a warm cloak made of sweet, earthy moodiness. Her current CD - “Closer To Ready”, to be released very soon, provides a personal and venerable window into her life that carries you through a musical journey that leaves you wanting more.......................

Influences: So many influences... My dad Brent J. Dawson - one of the best singers I know... Carolyn Renouf my cousin who has a such a pure, strong, and beautiful voice, who taught me how to harmonize for which I am eternally grateful... And so many wonderful artists have inspired me, the classics: k.d. Lang, Bonnie Raitt, Patsy, and Ella, the constant: Ruthie Foster, Eliza Gilkyson, Alison Krauss, Sarah McLachlan, and then the barrage of more recent artists that have lit my fire - such as The Wailin' Jennys, Serena Ryder, Martina Sorbera, KT Tunstall, Sarah Harmer, Kinnie Starr, Feist... And that's only the women! I could go on and on... There's so much amazing talent out there - and a lot of it's Canadian 'EH?'
