Acclaimed local singer Caitlin Smith and Narcs bass player Tony Waine also make guest appearances on several tracks. ================================================= Gillespie has previously released four studio albums (3 solo and one with RIANZ award winners the Narcs) and has shared the stage with artists such as Suzanne Vega, Neil Finn, Colin Hay, Chris Whitley Margaret Urlich, D.I.G, Ed Kuepper, Neil Murray and Dave Dobbyn. ================================================= ================================================= Gillespie is currently working on album number six with drummer/collaborater Rob Grosser. This album looks like being an eclectic mix of Jazz/Rock/Folk influences (imagine a blender containing Astral Weeks, After the Goldrush and Heart Attack and Vine) - due for release in 2008/9.A preview is available on myspace.com/famousblueraincoatproject or Check out www.waynegillespie.com for a free download demo of "Bananas" (under "News" section).=================================================WA YNE GILLESPIE BIO ================================================= "His songs shine with a dark brilliance" -Colin Hogg NZ Herald. ================================================= Born (born December 31, 1954) into a musical family (father Mick a Jazz pianist and sister Sally a clarinet teacher), Gillespie was first inspired to write songs after hearing Leonard Cohen’s “You Know Who I Am” on a local radio show at the age of 14. ================================================= Some years later Gillespie makes his professional debut busking in Paris subways, playing to audiences in London folk clubs and Sydney’s Darlinghurst cafes before returning to Auckland in the early 80’s. ================================================= Wayne quickly became one of the leading figures in the prominant Auckland Acoustics movement playing pubs, cafes and folk clubs augmented by his band of brilliant musicians, Denny Stanway (vocals), Brendan Power (Harmonica) and Bob Shepheard (Fretless Bass ================================================= Gillespie's first solo album, the acoustic 'Wayward Son' was released on his own label in 1984 and made the finals of the New Zealand Music awards in two categories: - Most Promising Vocalist & Folk Album of the Year. The song 'Away with You' off this album also won a special APRA songwriting award in the same year. This album also featured Harmonica player Brendan Power, Chanteuse Denny Stanway and Bob Shepheard on Bass. ================================================= His second album 'New Locations' was released by CBS NZ/Aus in 1987 and was produced by ex Fairport Convention member the late Trevor Lucas. This album saw Wayne in the New Zealand charts and playing live in Australasia with artists such as Suzanne Vega, Dave Dobbyn, Redgum, and Shona Lang. Wayne relocated to Sydney in 1988. ================================================= Wayne's third album 'Living in Exile' was released in 1993 (through Sony NZ & Festival Aust) and included Dave Dobbyn, Margaret Urlich, Mal Green (Split Enz) , Amanda Brown (Go-Betweens), Peter Maloney, Tony Waine (Narcs) & Nigel Gavin as guests. This album received much critical acclaim on both sides of the Tasman and saw Gillespie touring extensively in Australia and New Zealand both solo acoustic and in band mode. ================================================= Wayne was being invited to produce and co-write on New Zealand band the Narcs third album "Push the Boat Out". Wayne toured NZ twice with the Narcs in 96/97================================================= in the 90's Gillespie also made many Australian TV appearances in and performed on the final closing night of Ponsonby's legendary 'Gluepot' venue with Dave Dobbyn, Neil Finn, Shona Lang and the Brainchilds. ================================================= A hiatus in recording and performing followed while Wayne completed a psychology degree at Macquarie university. His honours thesis 'The Personality of Rock Musicians' was published in the UK Journal of Music Psychology in October 2000. ================================================= Focus on family and parenthood followed and last years release "Live at the Bunker" was Gillespie's first new release in 10 years."Live at the Bunker" being the 5th album by Wayne Gillespie in collaboration with long-time musical associate guitarist Nigel Gavin.================================================= I am currently working (slowly) on album number six with drummer/writer / engineer Robbie Grosser - hopefully due for release in 2008.
