Thorne Ecological Institute was founded in 1954 by Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, II and is celebrating its 53rd Anniversary this year! Over the last five decades, Thorne has connected over 165,000 children, teens, and adults to nature and is a recognized leader in the field. In 2004, Thorne received the Nonprofit of the Year Environmental Education Award for Excellence from the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE).
Thorne currently offers four programs:
(1) The Thorne Natural Science School (TNSS) was established 50 years ago, and reaches 1,100 students each summer through field-based classes for kids ages 3-15. TNSS is offered at both Thorne locations – Boulder and Waterton Canyon in Littleton.
(2) Project BEAR (Building Environmental Awareness and Respect) is the Institute's in-school program, building literacy through interactive, inquiry-based classroom and field trip programs that are designed to engage students in nature and in learning. Project BEAR reaches over 8,000 students annually, including many low-income, culturally-diverse children, often connecting them to nature for the first time in their lives.
(3) The Sombrero Marsh Environmental Education Center was created in 1999 through a Partnership with the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks Department (OSMP) and the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD). Through this Partnership, Thorne provides teacher training workshops and environmental education classes on Wetland Ecology for over 1,000 BVSD students annually.
(4) The Waterton Canyon Environmental Education Center was created in 1994 in partnership with Denver Water in the historic Kassler Center. The South Platte River travels from the mountains to the prairie through Waterton Canyon, a critical wildlife corridor and recreational trail. The Waterton Canyon Center provides place-based field experiences for students, teachers, and families while exploring over 50 acres of natural areas and privileged access to the Bob Taylor Ecological Area.
By providing valuable educational experiences to Colorado's youth, and training for area teachers, Thorne helps students become educated in the sciences, connected to nature, and invested in conservation.
