SongCity Studios is located in Nashville, TN and has very nice high-end equipment, run by seasoned professionals.And for those interested, we provided excellent recording services that match or beat the quality and services of higher priced studios on the Row, or on Berry Hill in the Nashville area. Our customers don't have to pay for location with us, because we don't have to either. We are just as close to downtown Nashville as Berry Hill is. You also don’t have to deal with the traffic of those over-populated locations. Our money continually goes into excellent equipment, upgrades, and acoustic environmental treatment. We have great sounding rooms, along with all the latest cutting edge tracking and editing technology.
We have top quality mics, mic pres, and give close attention to making sure the signal is given perfectly pure treatment from the source all the way to the track. Our motto is, “Great gear and the truth will set your music free”. We have years of experience under our belt. We run RADAR analog-to-digital audio conversion with Apogee digital clocking precision. Great analog sound with excellent digital precision.
The Signal Path (from artist/musician to the track) Our equipment Brands are Neumann, Soundelux, Audio Technica, AKG, Shure, Rode, API preamps, Universal Audio 610 with 1176 compression, along with another 16 channels of exquisite Millennia preamps. All this great analog audio is then channeled through a classic Trident Console into RADAR converters, all digitally synced to an Apogee Big Ben word clock. By the way, our Trident has great sounding micpres built into it also. All this warm, perfectly clear analog sound is then edited and mixed with digital perfection using the Steinberg editing and mixing environment, which operates at 32 bit floating point precision. 32 bit floating point immediately provides more separation, and fuller sound than Pro Tools, which operates at only 24 bit floating point. Steinberg is, and has been Pro Tools arch nemesis and worse nightmare for some time now.
Steinberg has taken the lead in providing cutting edge digital editing in the recording industry. Steinberg also shares an equal number of hit records that have been produced using their mixing software, across all the music markets. Steinberg’s editing features far exceed those of Pro Tools, which has been slowly and surely been turning into the old standard that can’t seem to keep up. These 2 companies have been hard rivals for some time now. But it's hard for Pro Tools to stay in step with Steinberg's German engineering and their innovative approach to non-linear audio editing and treatment. For those who don’t realize it, Steinberg is the company that created and patented the ASIO standard for syncing and digital audio and compensating latency in relation to analog referencing.
Last but not least in the musical chain of referencing the final mix, is the speaker system. You can have all the best gear in the world, but if you can’t hear how it will translate into the real world, then what good is it? We used to run Mackie HR824 speakers and grew tired of how tubby, and undetailed they were. We had a speaker shootout and tried every major near field reference monitor we could rent or get our hands on. In the end we decided on the ADAM S2.5a, and a second pair of the new JBL 6300 series speaker system with a 15-inch subwoofer. Both systems reveal incredible detail across the spectrum, which translates wonderfully to every outside stereo system we play our mixes in. The studio speaker system can make or break any engineer. We are extremely satisfied with our speaker choice and so are our customers. Remixes due to detail and EQ are pretty much a non-issue at our studio.
