KaNikki Jakarta - International Performance Poet

About Me

When reality is heard in the form of spoken word, KaNikki Jakarta is speaking; Listen and you just may hear the truth. A Capricorn, given the name KaNikki Jakarta at birth. She began winning national poetry competitions at the early as age 12. As an adult K.J., has spoken her unique poetry into microphones as far south as Texas, as far north as New York, as far west as California and recently has been introduced to the United Kingdom. Sporting 3 inch heels, reciting positive, powerful, lyrics, wearing the titles hostess, poet, writer, & author, KaNikki J. founded the column THE WEDNESDAY DISCUSSION, in October 2000 that currently reaching over 600 readers in 21 states via email weekly. Her first publication, a chapbook entitled KANIKKI WHO? was published by The Future Artist Agency on Thanksgiving Day in 2001. This collection sold units in the thousands without any store releases. The power of her spoken word landed her a leading role in the independent film entitled PLAYED OUT written and directed by Kim Bey. This film influenced poetry with the reality of rape and HIV/AIDS. Her sophomore release, a paperback poetry collection entitled THE SKILLZ OF A SISTAH was published by Great Publishing Company LLC in April 2003. Living with the name KaNikki which means “great writer” she has tried a successful hand at writing her first novel entitled IN REAL LIFE which landed her amongst the top 20 nominated for Best New Author Award by Cush City. IN REAL LIFE is a sassy, suspense, 340 page fictional novel that was powered by some of her real life experiences and previous written poetry. The novel landed on African American fiction shelves on August 25, 2006. It was released on the first day of summer to the “underground” and sold over 500 copies by word of mouth in the first week. The positive feedback from the novel encouraged KaNikki to begin the sequel to IN REAL LIFE entitled THE COLOR BLUE which will officially release fall 2007. KaNikki’s interest in bringing spoken word to the forefront inspired her to introduce The National Underground Spoken word & Poetry Awards (NUSPA) in April 2005. As a poet, KaNikki’s voice has been heard over the radio waves of 95.5fm, 93blx fm, Interfaith voices, and 97.5fm. Her performances has been captured on poetry shows such as The Poet’s Joint, The Cypher’s Corner, The Poet’s Café, and the Poet’s Drum within the last year. Her written work has been displayed on The Wednesday Discussion, Soulstice City Magazine, Def Poetry Jam, as well as a host of other radio stations and websites. She currently has an ongoing literary series entitled BURNING BRIDGES that delves into the characters from THE COLOR BLUE and IN REAL LIFE. BURNING BRIDGES appears in the black author’s corner of Experience Reality Magazine.
