PRINCESS OF CONTROVERSY BIO
Soulful! Powerful! Engaging! Sexy! Conscious! True hip-hop. All of this and more make up the dynamic artivist, the Princess of Controversy. From down-home country “snagging” hooks (soultry as she calls it) to hit-em-hard in the dome lyrics, this femcee sensation is capturing the hearts and minds of many. Her debut EP album release, Personal Messenger, hit the ground running in 2004 and took by storm the attention of the Metropolitan area. Her hit single, Serenity, combined the funky Chop-E Chop-E sound with Controversy’s fiery lyrical flare. Princess likens herself to the style of Lauryn Hill mixed with a splash of Queen Latifah and the boldness of Betty Wright. That powerhouse combination is a sure win on the music scene of today/ POC is a refreshing new wave to the next level of hip-hop.
This native-born Washingtonian mixed with North Cackalacki” roots has been gracing stages since the tender age of five. While on the road to becoming a world-famous actress, Best discovered her love for music and reaching people was even greater than she had imagined. So she took the passion from her poetry and theater skills up a notch and emerged onto the music scene. Her subject matter can range anywhere from being hypnotized (Hypnotic, duet with I.Q. from tha Remainz) to City Eyes, a close-up look at how living in the city all your life gives you a certain mentality. However, Controversy’s talent doesn’t stop at that. She self-proclaims herself an ARTIVIST. She defines that as a multi-faceted artist that works for the people. When Princess isn’t on stage flowing, she is at schools teaching youth about music, theater and social justice issues. You can catch her coordinating PIC (Prison Industrial Complex) workshops and performances with her family, Blackout Arts Collective (www.blackoutartscollective.com), or just politicking with on the street corners with elders and young ones about life. POC says it’s in these places that she gets her inspiration for a lot of her writing. The artivist has a deep passion for making conscious hip-hop that people will respect, listen and party to. “That’s a really hard task that often times seems almost impossible to do,” says Princess. “The problem that artivists like myself face, is that in the midst of trying to bring positive vibes from music, people (as well as ourselves) often forget those same messengers are hue-man and prone to the same trials as everyone else.”
Despite muddy waters, this Lioness (reps her Leo born sign August 9) is determined to roar! Now underway with her second album, Princess says it’s time for her to elevate the game and kick in more doorways for female emcees. She says we can expect some unexpected things with this next album, and also more personal testimony. “I realized on the last album, that while I was great speaking about those issues that I saw in the community that I wanted to help change, but I didn’t speak a lot about the things going on in my own life. At least not totally. You have to be willing to shed yourself for people to connect with you, your flaws, insecurities, all your ish!” With a name like Controversy, the new album ( name TBD) is bound to get into some real ISH!!!! POC says this album is more than just the music, it’s about the life or lives in the music. After Lauryn Hill, the world of femcees silently went underground, will Princess of Controversy be the Harriet to bring them out to freedom? The answer is looking very positive! PRINCESS OF CONTROVERSY LIVE AT THE PREMIERE OF TV ONE'S STAGE BLACK (SINGING FLY AWAY w D Charles, KevO, Alexei, Yousef and Carlton)THE MUSIC BIO:

Melissa Princess Best emerged as The Princess of Controversy (P.O.C. for short) about 4 years ago, after a friend saw her performing poetry and recommended that she should try rapping. Since that day, this multi-faceted ARTIVIST, took flight and didn't look back! She began performing at area clubs and worked with a few producers and in less than a six month span, emerged the EP Personal Messenger!

Born in Washington, DC, she resided in the area until age 10 before heading south to North Carolina, where her parents are originally from. She returned home to DC in 1999. Since age 5, Princess has been drawn to the stage, in all aspects of performing to include writing. From a youth on into her early twenties, her sole focus has been theater, and she also has a strong affinity for poetry. Her love for performing deepened during her college years at North Carolina Central University and the University of the District of Columbia. After graduating college and trying her hand at "Hollywood life", Princess realized it wasn't fulfilling her the way she had dreamed it would. She wasn't doing what she felt she was supposed to until she discovered rap as a gateway for her artistry.

The rapstress began to see parallels in the downfall of the people and the vicious system that perpetuates it. She began to get tired of the images on television and how it affected youth and adult minds. She got tired of the government cover-ups and seeing the effects of living in a "blind nation." In 2002, she made a commitment to herself, the Spirit and the community to help bring people together to a higher consciousness of themselves, in order for them to have true freedom and power.

As an actress, rapper, singer, poet, public speaker and activist, Princess seeks to achieve reaching people beyond limitations and perceptions of what "music is."

Personal Messenger is only an introduction to what's in store from The Princess of Controversy. It's a combination of expressive messages that she refuses to label as a "type" of music. Princess hopes that, "...you take what you're supposed to get from it." Inspired by the likes of Lauryn Hill and Queen Latifah, Princess writes what she sees and feels and tries best to write so that the listener can feel and experience life as she does. From everyday living topics to political freedom, Princess says that her music is created with no limits to learning. That is a true evolutionary! As this DC native branches out to spread her light to the world, she prays that with the Spirit within her, she will help to cause a chain reaction of change that will encourage a sense of unity in us all. IT'S TIME FOR THE EVOLUTION!!!

Influences: Miss Kanikki J. (International Poet and Author), My Mom and Dad, , My Brother Malcolm, My Sisters (Teena, Gee Gee, & Simone), Lauryn Hill Common, India Arie, Betty Wright, Tina Turner, Betty Davis, Whitney Houston, Regina Belle, Nas, Arrested Development, Erykah Badu, Donnie Hathaway, Fertile Ground, Sounds of Blackness, Aretha Franklin,Thirteen of Nazareth Professor Amelia Gray, and so many more! All those who write and perform to change peoples lives for the better!
Sounds Like: Lauryn Hill, Yo-Yo and Monie Love (so they say--I don't mind).------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------THE ALL-AROUND BIO (cause there was no place else to put it):Melissa Princess Best, as known as the ARTIVIST Princess of Controversy is a socially conscious- performer and activist who seeks to empower peoples lives through music (rapping & singing), acting, poetry, and public speaking and edu-tainment.
