PRINCESS OF CONTROVERSY LIVE AT THE PREMIERE OF TV ONE'S STAGE BLACK (SINGING FLY AWAY w D Charles, KevO, Alexei, Yousef and Carlton)THE MUSIC BIO:
Melissa Princess Best emerged as The Princess of Controversy (P.O.C. for short) about 4 years ago, after a friend saw her performing poetry and recommended that she should try rapping. Since that day, this multi-faceted ARTIVIST, took flight and didn't look back! She began performing at area clubs and worked with a few producers and in less than a six month span, emerged the EP Personal Messenger!
Born in Washington, DC, she resided in the area until age 10 before heading south to North Carolina, where her parents are originally from. She returned home to DC in 1999. Since age 5, Princess has been drawn to the stage, in all aspects of performing to include writing. From a youth on into her early twenties, her sole focus has been theater, and she also has a strong affinity for poetry. Her love for performing deepened during her college years at North Carolina Central University and the University of the District of Columbia. After graduating college and trying her hand at "Hollywood life", Princess realized it wasn't fulfilling her the way she had dreamed it would. She wasn't doing what she felt she was supposed to until she discovered rap as a gateway for her artistry.
The rapstress began to see parallels in the downfall of the people and the vicious system that perpetuates it. She began to get tired of the images on television and how it affected youth and adult minds. She got tired of the government cover-ups and seeing the effects of living in a "blind nation." In 2002, she made a commitment to herself, the Spirit and the community to help bring people together to a higher consciousness of themselves, in order for them to have true freedom and power.
As an actress, rapper, singer, poet, public speaker and activist, Princess seeks to achieve reaching people beyond limitations and perceptions of what "music is."
Personal Messenger is only an introduction to what's in store from The Princess of Controversy. It's a combination of expressive messages that she refuses to label as a "type" of music. Princess hopes that, "...you take what you're supposed to get from it." Inspired by the likes of Lauryn Hill and Queen Latifah, Princess writes what she sees and feels and tries best to write so that the listener can feel and experience life as she does. From everyday living topics to political freedom, Princess says that her music is created with no limits to learning. That is a true evolutionary! As this DC native branches out to spread her light to the world, she prays that with the Spirit within her, she will help to cause a chain reaction of change that will encourage a sense of unity in us all. IT'S TIME FOR THE EVOLUTION!!!
