We aim to rescue and rehabilitate any horse or pony in need, with the view to rehoming them to suitable long term loan homes once they are recovered and ready to be rehomed.
Another equine rescue centre is clearly needed in the south-west as local equine charities are continuously full and are having to turn unwanted horses and ponies away every week.
We also believe that Equine Assisted Therapy is a valuable way of helping vulnerable adults and children. It has been shown that people benefit greatly from contact with equines, it is our mission to integrate people from the community and view the centre as a therapeutic rescource for anyone wishing to become involved with the horses.
Please also contact us if you are concerned about the safety or welfare of a horse or pony, and we will do all we can to help

The pictures below show Alfie's before and after pictures. The 'before' picture was actually taken a few weeks after he first arrived with us, and at that point, he had put on a little bit of weight, so you can imagine how bad he was at first! The 'after' picture is a happy healthy Alfie....as it should be!

Petition to stop British horse slaughter:
The following quotes by Animal Aid Director Andrew Tyler:
‘The fundamental problem at the heart of the horse slaughter scandal that we have uncovered is that these horses are bred to excess. They are produced for commercial reasons, by both the Thoroughbred racing industry and by those servicing the pet horse and pony market. When an animal is no longer useful, he or she is often simply disposed of. This is the fate of thousands of healthy horses and ponies every year.’
'The horses shown being killed in the Animal Aid undercover footage came from owners who either dealt directly with the abattoir or who didn’t know or care that their animals would end up in that establishment. What all former owners have in common is the transient use of their animal. They feel that their responsibility is relinquished once the horse or pony is of no further use to them.'
'There are alternatives to abattoir killing that all horse owners should be aware of: euthanasia by a vet; being killed by bullet in the horse’s paddock; sanctuary via a care centre with a loan programme; or committing to the welfare of a horse throughout his or her natural lifespan.'
Last Angel Equine Defence hopes to see an improvement in the way in which horses are disposed of, and some of the above methods employed; methods which will lessen the number of horses being killed in a slaughterhouse. But until such time, the problem remains.
'Euthanasia by a vet'
This would be a preferred alternative to disposing of a horse at a slaughterhouse, but many horse owners don't want to (or can't afford to) pay the fees for euthanasia.
'being killed by bullet in the horse’s paddock'
We cannot comment on this point in detail, but we would imagine that this would be quite a difficult thing to arrange, although, it would be an alternative to abattoir.
'committing to the welfare of a horse throughout his or her natural
lifespan.'
Unfortunately, many horse owners either do not wish to care for a horse for its natural lifetime. Many owners want a horse that can be ridden. If the horse is no longer useful to them, they dispose of it. Or, they may simply find that keeping the horse is too expensive.
'sanctuary via a care centre with a loan programme'
Sanctuaries in the UK are full to bursting point. For example, Redwings sanctuary receive more than 1200 calls a year from owners who wish to secure a place for their horse at the Sanctuary and other sanctuaries receive a similar number of requests. While sanctuary life would be the first option for many owners, it is simply not possible for this number of equines to be admitted to sanctuaries, most of which are already full.
More horse sanctuaries need to be opened in the UK, to help alleviate this growing problem.

Race Horse Death Watch
Animal Aid's Race Horse Death Watch was launched just before the 2007 Grand National. Its purpose is to expose and record every on-course thoroughbred fatality in the UK.
The horse racing authorities have resolutely failed to put horse death information into the public domain, preferring to dismiss equine fatalities as ‘accidental’ and ‘unexplained’. Even when several horses die at a single meeting, the term ‘statistical blip’ is often deployed.
Animal Aid has produced a series of revealing reports over the last seven years exposing the welfare problems associated with Thoroughbred breeding, racing, training and disposal of commercially ‘unproductive’ horses. Our research indicates that an average of 375 horses are raced to death every year. One-third die on racecourses, while the others are destroyed as a result of training injuries, or are killed because they are no longer commercially viable.

The Horses' Prayer
Feed me, give me water, and care for me, and when the day's
work is done, give me shelter, a clean bed and a wide stall.
Talk to me. Your voice often substitutes for the reins for me.
Be good to me and I will serve you cheerfully and love you.
Don't jerk the reins and don't raise the whip.
Don't beat or kick me when I don't understand you,
but rather give me time to understand you.
Don't consider it disobedience if I don't follow your commands.
Perhaps there is a problem with my saddle and bridle or hooves.
Check my teeth if I don't eat, maybe I have a toothache.
You know how that hurts.
Don't halter me too short and don't dock my
tail... it's my only weapon against flies and mosquitoes.
And at the end, dear master, when I am no longer any use to you,
don't let me go hungry or freeze and don't sell me.
Don't give me a master who slowly tortures me to death and lets me starve,
but rather be merciful and take care of me,
by letting me run and enjoy a warm pasture.
Let me request this of you and please don't regard it as
disrespectful
if I ask it in the name of Him who was born in a stable like me.
