BACKGROUND: NATIVE VOICE FILM FESTIVAL
Since it's inception in 2001, The Native Voice Film Festival has showcased 137 films and hosted 65 filmmakers and panelists. An important part of the festival is the "Youth in Media Forums," featuring daily workshops in the main theater for high school students to learn about media literacy, conscious consumerism, and empowerment through media and the telling of their stories. Working directly with superindendents of schools and area directors of Indian Education, the Youth Forums have hosted over 1600 students, many of whom travel from outlying reservation areas to participate and attend the festival.
The Native Voice Film Festival was featured in a double-page spread in the September, 2004 issue of National Geographic Magazine. The film that was highlighted in the National Geographic spread, EDGE OF AMERICA (Showtime Television), was the first honoree of The Native Voice Film Festival’s "Building Bridges Through Media" award (2004), and went on to receive a Peabody Award (2006) and a DGA Award for Director Chris Eyre (2006).
Major sponsors of this year’s festival include The City of Rapid City and KEVN Fox 7. Additional supporting sponsors are Rushmore Radio,National Indian Gaming Association, and The South Dakota Office of Tourism – Department of Film.
