GIG REVIEW - CROWDED OUT - THE THORNS - WEST MIDS - MAY 2007
Being a massive Neil Finn fan, and having seen Split Enz and Crowded House many times over a period of some thirty years, I was intrigued to see that ‘Crowded Out’ were playing at The Thorns.
If I’m honest, I went along not expecting much. I’d recently been to see another Crowded House tribute, and had come away fairly disappointed. But what I got was a pleasant surprise, and a performance that was far truer to the spirit of the original than anyone I’d seen before.
I suppose I am a harsh critic, being an ex-musician and also having seen the real thing so many times, but Crowded Out did not disappoint. Vocalist and guitarist Andy naturally sings like Neil Finn, and the band have obviously studied the arrangements, guitar and keyboard sounds and harmonies, and got the live sound just right. The keyboard player’s sound was particularly accurate I thought.
Crowded Out’s choice of material is excellent too. They played Crowded House’s new single ‘Don’t Stop Now’, which wasn’t even released at the time! They also tackled some very difficult songs – many that the real die-hard fans prefer – and played them well, plus of course treating the audience to the big hits like ‘Weather With You’ and ‘Don’t Dream it’s Over’.
I know looks aren’t everything, but they even looked the part. Bass player Tim could be Nick Seymour’s brother, and if front man Andy could grey the temples a bit…
These lads will only get better, and they’re pretty good already. If you want a good night out, spent listening to the music of one of the most melodic and talented bands ever, go and see Crowded Out. It’ll keep you going until you can get your fix of the real thing, thankfully back together again and currently on a world tour. The renewed interest in them won’t do any harm to their best tribute band either!

GIG REVIEW - CROWDED OUT 'UNPLUGGED' - PONTEFRACT CASTLE, LONDON - June 23rd 2007
...Time was standing still, always the sign of a good gig, and after a simply
fantastic rendition of 'I Got You' which was spine chilling, the crowd
called out for more - talk about having an audience eating out of the palm
of your hand... "Don't dream its over" was then followed by a shouty request
session and we refused to let the band get off the stage - it's a testament
to the boys passion that they put up with it all and after finishing as they had
started (we missed 'Distant Sun', so I asked for it) they totally brought the
house down. By this stage it was packed, it was loud, it was emotional, in
fact, it was utterly bloody fantastic...
