"Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step." -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I'm an author, teacher, and motivational speaker, but most importantly I'm a mom, an activist, former foster kid (Namaste to my fellow foster bros and sisters- see the Heroes section for some exciting stuff!), former homeless person, and one who believes in the power of kindness. I am living proof that The Secret works! My first book, Damaged Goods: Adults Can Heal from Childhood Trauma, was released in 2005. I will be writing the revision and adding a lot to it this year. There is also a major motion picture being made about me, so that's really exciting! The book I'm currently working on is called The Fundamentals of Success with Dr. Jack Canfield (yep, the creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series). This book is loosely based on Jack's The Success Principles, but where The Success Principles was written for someone in middle management who wants to make it to the top, The Fundamentals of Success is written for those at the bottom who are ready to climb to the top. Homeless to factory worker to anyone in a dead-end job, this is the book for you! I've been there and done it and it's not as tough as it sounds. Look for The Fundamentals of Success to be out later this year. I promise you'll love it!I'm also the CEO and president of Chicken Soup Kitchens, Inc., where we feed hot meals and provide education to the homeless and needy. Our first Chicken Soup Kitchen is opening in Denver soon and I'm so excited about it! Our other mission is to help regenerate dead farmlands in Africa, giving the beautiful folks there a better economy and returning their sense of pride. My favorite job in my life is being the mom of three wonderful boys, ages 16, 9, and 6. I got lucky- they're great guys! My six year old, Bryan, was born with the congenital heart defect (CHD) called TGA, or transposition of the great arteries. The docs said he'd die, had no chance of making it, but he fought and won. I've got some incredible kiddos! Free Image HostingMy second favorite job is teaching The Fundamentals of Success and The Secret to welfare-to-work folks, though I prefer to call them "Divas In Training". Got a nice ring to it, eh? Some are homeless, some are prostitutes, some are recovering addicts, etc., but what they all have in common is that they're looking for a positive change in their lives. My own mentors did this for me when I was dirt poor and had nothing. It's amazing to see the look of confidence on another's face when she realizes that you don't have to have even a quarter in your pocket to begin building emotional and financial riches; you just have to have the correct mindset and you can begin to manifest anything you desire. Go back and read that last sentence again, please; it's important! Teaching this is fun, but seeing others flourish is the real prize. What a rush! It makes me high! I love it! It's worth saying again- "Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. How cool is that? Dr. King rocked! And he emcompassed so much of what I teach- that no matter who you are or where you come from, we ALL have the same chance of making it- it's just that some of us have to take a different route to success like I did. I was an unwanted child who was terribly abused by my mother and hated, having to hide in closets from her to survive, but the power of my thoughts kept me sane. They drew the right people to me and led me to listen to their words. I kept the right thoughts in my mind, only thinking of how wonderful it would be someday when I built my own powerful life. I didn't allow my thoughts to wander to, "Why me?" because that would've ruined me and my survival instinct told me that. So I kept my thoughts on what I manifested and drew to me. Even though I was a tiny little girl with no parental positive reinforcement, when Earth, Wind, and Fire sang, "You're a shing star no matter who you are, shining bright to see what you can truly be," I listened as though they were talking to me, parenting me. It was survival, but I kept that thought. I knew that I had drawn into my life these words, manifesting what I needed to hear at the time. I was comforted, as if a parent had hugged me, tucking me into bed. That is just one example of how I was parented without parents, so to speak. (And thank you EWF, for responding to that story in my comments. That's very sweet of you!) It was survival, but I survived using my thoughts. And thoughts become things, so now I use my thoughts to prosper. Believe in the power of your thoughts. And couple that with kindness. You can't lose.

My Interests

Emotional Freedom Techniques Lyrics to "Far From Here", the song usually on this page, are at the end of the Heroes section. Alissa and Ryan sang it for me at Alissa's house 3-14-07. Amazing and beautiful! Thanks, guys! Free Image Hosting Doing whatever it takes to make the word "homeless" archaic, regeneration of farmland in Africa, music, teaching, speaking, writing, comedy (Adam Kontras is a riot!- videos, look up Lets Bomb Iran), medical research so no more babies are born with congenital heart defects. I'd like to meet:

I'd like to meet like-minded people, ready-to-make-it-to-the-top entrepreneurs, and friends. If I had my 'druthers, I'd someday have a chance to sit down over coffee with Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, and Mother Theresa to get parenting and career advice. What a trip that would be!As far as people alive today, I dream of someday being in the same room with Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Nelson Mandela, Bob Proctor, Sylvester Stallone, Robin Williams, Oprah Winfrey, Chaka Khan, Reese and Verdine White, Ralph Johnson and Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind and Fire, and Arnold Swarzenegger. These are all people who, while I was growing up, indirectly parented me through their work. Some of them I know, some of them I don't, but I'd adore the chance to thank them all together some day.I also want to meet more and more former and current foster kids. We've already done the tough stuff in life. Now let's work together to make the world a better place!

Music:

The greatest band on the planet- Earth, Wind and Fire! Ba De Ya! "You're a shining star no matter who you are, shining bright to see what you can truly be!" Shining Star -- Earth Wind & Fire

Add to My Profile | More Videos "Don't play what's there, play what's not there"- Miles Davis...Ryan Bueter- click on him in my friends section and check it out! This guy is HOT! And his music's great, too... Anything David Foster touches is fantastic! Fred Johnson (fredjohnsonvoice.com)- check this guy out! Also a former foster kiddo, Fred has a fantastic gift that I can't explain- you just have to check it out for yourself. Talk about spiritual gifts! Wow! Inspector Double Negative and Breed for some great hip hop- check 'em out on my friends list. (I just realized this- they're ALSO former foster kids- are we cool, gorgeous, gifted, and talented or what?) Carlos Santana is also a hero of mine. He says, "It's a joy to touch people's hearts- always." Check out his story of triumph some time! Lots of 80s and 90s, stuff I grew up on, but I also love a lot of the new stuff that's out now. Hero Carlos Santana being honored as a legend... A favorite love song....This is Quincy Jones and Tamia. I used to sing this song to my son, Bryan, when he was born with a heart defect and the docs kept saying he was going to die. By the way, Bry made it! Love this song!

Television:

I'm a bit of a news junkie- I find that The Colbert Report is the best place to find an unbiased view of the political scene, any of the Law and Order series, Comedy Central keeps me sane. And why the heck is CourtTV so addictive?

Heroes:

Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen- Thank you for your guidance and belief in me. Dr. Rodger Mee of New Zealand and Dr. David Chan of Columbus Children's Hospital (Ohio)- Thank you for saving Baby Bryan's life and not giving up on him like almost everyone else did. Cheri Kerr of Dublin (Ohio) Counseling Center- She's been my therapist and friend for years and has helped me understand that I am not my past. If you ever decide to retire, I will selfishly picket your home until you change your mind. hehe Bob Proctor- Your intelligence is extraordinary! Maya Angelou- What's there to say; it's Maya Angelou... Eleanor Roosevelt- That lady rocked! My three wonderful sons who are all special in their own unique ways! Betsy Lefsky and Jen White- Your friendship and believing in me has brought me out of my shell and launched us into a lifetime love and friendship like I've never known. Some of us are blessed with people who teach us to truly spread our wings and fly high. This you both have done for me. Between the '09 Oscars and Big Rig Burgers, it looks like together, we're taking the world by storm! Of course Wonder Woman, because she's way cool and could deflect bullets with her silver wrist bands. When I was a little girl, I used to tape silver Pop Tart wrappers around my wrists to deflect the 'mean bullets' that were said to me. It worked. Now as an adult, I only use the Pop Tart wrapper on the wrist trick when I've had too many margaritas. And it still works. ;) Carlos Santana for encouraging me, years ago at the Kansas City Jazz Fest, to "do everything physically and spiritually possible to live your dreams, girl!" Last but certainly not least, Ohio State's Troy Smith- The first foster kid to win the Heismann- Living proof that no matter who you are or where you come from, you can be anything you decide to be. That's some strong stuff! Troy didn't just win a trophy as the best college athlete of the year; he also gave strength to every one of us former and present foster kids out there. Sometimes, even though we don't all know eachother, the other foster kids out there feels like the only family we've got. The way this man has lived his life shows every current foster kid in America that absolutely nothing can stand in their way. They, just like those from 'perfect' families, are limitless! We, your foster brothers and sisters, are so proud of you! See, foster bros and sisters, I told you guys we could do anything- ANYTHING! We are NOT our past!
Save a Life: Get This Code! "Far From Here" lyrics by Alissa Moreno: fight hard on a night like this look for a star and wish you could get out of it then bite down and then pray, pray, pray you'll make it through this to sing and say you hold life dear moments turn to hours which become years.... and now i'mfar from here and we are happy far from here we are all right far from here things are peaceful far from here we have insight far from here we've detangled our strangled hold and i hope to see you thererise high out of this whole scene look down and separate yourself from your worst dream then fly far and then stay, stay, stay out of the way until the coast is clear and safe moments turn to hours that become years..... and now i'mfar from here and we are happy far from here we are all right far from here things are peaceful far from here we have insight far from here we've detangled our strangled hold and i hope to see you thereoh it's hard to imagine the things that we survive will we understand it all one day when we arrive?far from here we are happy far from here we are all right far from here things are peaceful far from here we have insight far from here we are laughing far from here we are thankful far from here we're forgiven and for that we are grateful far from here we've detangled our strangled hold and i hope to see you there
