Derek M originates from Liverpool UK. A former member of the city’s infamous garage punk band Haddock Fish Beast (1987-1991), Derek maintained an appreciation of Reggae and Dub music. During the mid to late nineties he started to DJ, playing at squat parties and on the free party scene. In 1999 he teamed up with some local DJs and ran a dance night called Mango Lassie that presented a mix up cup of Reggae, Dub, Jungle, Dancehall, Hip Hop, and Soul at the Zanzibar club in Seel St.
In 2001 Derek migrated to Australia and continues to be based in Melbourne where he has played numerous gigs under the name of DJ Uptight or Uptight Selekshan at many of Melbourne’s top music venues. He has played support sets for various international artists including Dub Syndicate with Lloyd Parks, Lee Scratch Perry, Mad Professor, Sly and Robbie, Mykal Rose, Big Youth, Third World, Iration Steppes, Lucky Dube. In 2002 he began to build the Heartical HiFi - Melbourne’s original champion Reggae/Dubwise sound system.
Since 2004 Derek has been involved with PBS community radio and presents the Heartical show which can be heard every Sunday from 5-7pm on PBS 106.7FM
Steve Austin migrated to Australia in 2005 and hails from Southend on sea, UK, once described as the Dub capital of the world by Joey Jay of Good Times Soundsysytem. So needless to say as a youth Steve developed an interest in Reggae and dub music, and would attend many of the Soundsystem sessions and blues dances that happened in his home town. Later he started collecting records and got involved with a local soundsystem called Inspiration who have taken part in the Dub Cup Clash circuit and are still going strong today.
Nowadays Steve lives in Melbourne where he linked up with Derek M and Joined the Heartical Hi-Fi crew.
See the wicked run when Steve Austin drops his bionic selection.
