Review of a City Screen Gig, Taken from 'The Talk Magazine" York's music journal:
"This wasn't a 'usual' night of Bass, Lead and Drums. I often feel slightly disappointed at the general lack of variety in mainstream music (Oasis and REM, Coldplay covers) wailed badly by grey jumper wearing depressives - especially in town centre gigs, and I was pleasantly surprised that this night wasn't the case.
A warm support of Folk music and harmony by Martin and Marianne from the Wildwood Flower Mountain Music Club (visiting from North Devon) had already got everyone in a singing mood - particularly with classics from 'O Brother Where Art Thou - so when Moonshine Creek came on, everyone was already in good form for a great night.
Moonshine Creek, who have been together for little more that a year, comprise of Dave Purcell on rock steady guitar pickin' and vocals with rampant Dylan-esque Harmonica, Miranda Powers on (mostly) harmony vocals and percussion and Aidan Lucas with a series of rapid Mandolin licks and Howls from the Fiddle. Their renditions of American Civil War tunes like 'Dixieland' and vintage folk footstompers such as 'That'll Be A Better Day' and "Shack No.9" caught the attention of all, and the crowd loved it with a cheer! (Yes! they do grow it by the pound!)
It was also good to see a bit of on stage communication, and that they could tackle some gentler songs too. One song that caught my ear in particular was "Reuben's Train" an old American folk tune that has more recently been covered by "The Be Good Tanyas". It was great to hear the interplay of the Mandolin and Guitar while being treated to strong vocals by Miranda with overlapping harmony by Dave giving a punchy and sassy result.
Moonshine Creek: They're not Bluegrass, and they're not really country either - They Stomp! I had a great night, and so did everyone else by all accounts. Yee Ha! Go see them"
