About Me

Duryea T. Hawkins was born on the shore of the mighty Chesapeake and raised by loving hands on the Great Plains. Encouraged by his hippie forbears to wail along to " The End " 1 and to swagger around shamelessly proclaiming " I am Pozzo !" from the age of three, he adopted an understandably existentialist disposition to life. Though trained as a violinist from the age of 11 (paradoxically, one is now obliged to admit), he absconded with his father's acoustic guitar at 17 and never looked back. Since co-founding Chapel Hill's seminal (albeit justifiably ephemeral) Maxo and the Cube-o-Nauts one incandescent night in 1985 2 , he has spent the vast majority of his time toiling in the bowels of the Combine to distract himself from this secret ruling passion. No longer.

Duryea pledges undying allegiance to his once-adopted New York City, but currently lives peacefully in Roskilde , Denmark.

1 The parties in question now maintain that said wailing actually accompanied the inimitable "Suzy Creamcheese" . No doubt a cunning fiction. At any rate, much caterwauling was undoubtedly to be heard.

2 June 13th, if we're splitting hairs. It was a Thursday. Kevin Dixon 's "Happy Store" and Duryea's "Wailing Rock", "Crossing of the Bar" and 'Hieronymo's Mad Againe" were certainly the wheat from the chaff. The latter would go on to foment an open-mike poetry slam from the Carrboro skinheads in its only live performance at The Garage a week or so later. Too bad only the studio version remains in the vault. Bonus track: "All You People", Chuck Garrison's unapologetic salute to then-nascent Run-D.M.C.
