CARPHEAD

"CARPHEAD IS FOR EVERYONE!"

About Me

CARPHEAD is a new idea by a noisemerchant by the name of John Saunders. The noises made by John Saunders are the product of over 25 years of composing and rejecting most of his material, purely because he is never happy about most of what he does. But, occasionally he does come up with the odd ditty that he is proud of, and this page is the manifestation of these rare occasions. There is no history musically to speak of, so CARPHEAD will spare you the blah! The songs entered so far (except for ’Another World’) are from a mini album or EP as we used to call them in the olden days, called ’CONKERS’. The third piece of music is actually called HANG GLIDING WITH VERTIGO not V..................... as the player suggests. The album title ’CONKERS’ came about because the recording period spanned from autumn2005 to autumn 2006. The cover artwork is a little bit of friendly plagiarism based on the cover from an excellent British band...they know who they are! My workmate of nearly 30 years, Mervyn, produced the artwork. Just a thought that some people reading this may not know what CONKERS are, here is a brief explanation :- CONKERS is a game traditionally played by school children in the U.K. at least(though not so often due to safety restrictions nowadays). It involves knocking Horse Chestnuts, or Conkers, out of a tree by hurling a big stick. Then the Horse Chestnut would be drilled or pierced through the centre to accomodate a length of string, or preferably a bootlace threaded through and ingeniously knotted at one end to stop the Conker from flying off, provided that the correct end of the bootlace is held. The game would involve bashing the tops off of each others knuckles by swinging the Conker in a downward direction, though I believe that the original idea was to make contact with your opponents Conker and try to smash it into pieces to win the game. The victor would then add a number to his Conker i.e. a 1er or 22er or however many times that Conker had beaten another. I remember swapping a Woodbine from my packet of five for a 99er, though in hindsight I think that I may have been duped, that Conker didn’t even have a hole drilled through it! Some of you may think that wasn’t a brief explanation, but in my opinion, though admittedly biased, the subject of CONKERS deserves a greater coverage. Plain MySpace Layouts by Iron Spider
*****IMPORTANT NEWSFLASH***** For those that are interested, I have now started a sister site called INSTRUCARP which shall feature instrumental tracks from my past, but again in re-recorded form. There is a tune on Instrucarp from this page, but soon all will be new ones.

Band Members: CARPHEAD for the moment only consists of John Saunders, but there may be a proper group in time to come. The band name comes about from John’s obsession with Carp angling, of which he insists is quite ’ROCK & ROLL’! An interesting bit of trivia (for some), Captain Beefheart’s album ’Trout Mask Replica’, should be called Carp Mask Replica. Dat aint no Trouthead dat’s a CARPHEAD! I can only assume that Mr Van Vliet couldn’t find a trout big enough. If you have read this far, thanks for dropping in. Apparently, you can tell whether songs are any good or not, without clicking on a picture. If I’ve requested or accepted you, it’s purely because I like you!
Influences: The Beatles, The Stones, Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Peter Gabriel(& Genesis), Peter Hammill (& VdGG), Bill Nelson, Marillion, Vivian Stanshall & Neil Innes, Barclay James Harvest, Tom Verlaine (& Television), Captain Beefheart, Iggy Pop and a whole lot more very strong songwriters too many to mention
Sounds Like: All of the above influences John supposes but does try to keep things as original as possible.
Record Label: A fantasy label called LoFi
Type of Label: None
