"Cahornega was born in the winter of 2000, when four friends were meeting together and playing some instruments in a common place for them, Cabuerniga, a beautiful and great valley in the west of Cantabria. Cahórnega was the name they gave to the band (as regarding the name Cabuérniga received in the 15th Century). The components started researching and playing a few songs based on the traditional music of the region. After a short period of time playing these traditional songs, they considered the idea of extending their work by looking at Celtic regions, thinking about a heterogeneous folk adapted to the current times.
At the end of 2003, the guitarist and bouzoukist Jose Antonio Higuera "Connan" joined the group giving solidity to the rhythmic base. This way, the group started to work its own compositions and traditional versions of songs, always taking the accordion and bagpipe the weigh of the melody, being accompanied by the strings harmony and followed by the percussions rhythm.
In December 2004, Cahórnega became consolidated in the region by winning “Juvecantâ€, an important musical contest.

At the beginning of 2005 the components decided to reinforce the group including two new young musicians: Jorge Ibañez playing the guitar and Gonzalo Vallejo playing the fiddle, fostering the strings and adding one more melody. The band went on playing and, after several months of intensive work, the first CD titled “Cahórnega†came out to light in April 2006. The work is a self-production and it has a great amount of public reception: about 2000 copies have been sold in less than a year.
As everything in life is not full of smiles, the concert of the first CD presentation was the last one for Laura González, one of the band founders, who left the group to go on with her studies at the university. From the presentation in April until December 2006, the band has kept on growing by accumulating experiences and successful concerts, such a: Cantabria Infinita together with "The Chieftains" and "Carlos Nuñez", Secadura Folk with "Kepa Junquera" or Sauga Folk with "Altan" Cahórnega has also performed at national level in such distant regions as Galicia, AndalucÃa, Cataluña or Madrid.
In January 2007, Jorge and Gonzalo left the group and the rest of the components had a break to improve and restructure it including two new musicians, Pablo González (Low whistle, Bagpipes and Bouzouki) and Gustavo Gutiérrez (Guitars). Nowadays, the band continues working at a higher level with a more powerful sound and creating new songs which are hoped to be supported by the public as the ones composed before.
