About Me

STAY TUNED FOR SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS ON THIS YEAR'S CARNIVAL OF 5 FIRES.....
Gallery5, a community oriented and socially aware art gallery and performing art center located in Jackson Ward, re-opened the doors of Steamer Company No. 5 on April 15, 2005, in efforts to save the life of the National Historic Landmark. Our mission, among other things, is to encourage our local artists of all mediums to take action against the ever growing "art gallery" mentality, by making art accessible for all walks of life, by showcasing new forms of innovative and inter-active, visual and performing arts and artists, and engaging the focus of the community in its ever-growing struggle for positive change. We bring the FUN back into the art experience but make you think at the same time.
Gallery5, after 2 1/2 years, has proven that these forms of art, confronted with a society who have either the financial or artistic capability for positive change, is important for our community because it allows independent ideas to both unaware and inaccessible diversities.
Although our website includes most of Gallery5's previous activities, events and exhibits, it does not tell the entire story...
Gallery5 is housed in Virginia's oldest fire station and Richmond's oldest police station and jail. Built in 1849, this National Historic Landmark, and the men who worked within, added many colorful chapters to Richmond's illustrious past. In less than eighteen months, Gallery5 has transformed this beautiful relic from the past into a vibrant and exciting cacophony of sight and sound, hosting more visitors over those few months than during the entire 25 years of the former museum's operation. During the "First Fridays Art Walks" Gallery5 attracts, by far, the largest and most diverse, enthusiastic crowds. The visitors are treated to a "carnival" of art, not just a display. The brass poles and fire bells, horse and hand-drawn apparatus, jail cells and gallows blend beautifully with the contemporary and traditional art exhibited. While various bands, djs, and individual musicians provide the sounds for the evening, fire performers and costumed belly-dancers add to the sights.
Every "First Fridays", Gallery5's visitors are treated to an entirely different, themed art event. Each and every month thousands of visitors pass through the 158 year old front doors and enter a world of the unexpected. That was never more evident than during February 2006's "Disrobed" exhibit which, by police estimates, attracted approximately 5,000 guests. The two-block line lasted over four hours. "Disrobed" was Richmond's, and possibly Virginia's first, totally-nude art event. Its twenty-four models were tastefully presented in various poses, themed make-up and body paint. The exhibit's success was reported in both the New York and London Times. Gallery5 will hold "Disrobed2" this June.
