The Murfreesboro Post, an independent, community-based newspaper, will be published on Sundays and distributed to 45,000 households in the Murfreesboro market beginning in October. The Post is online now at www.murfreesboropost.com
"The Post will provide a unique and intensely community oriented news product, intended to appeal to traditional newspaper readers and non-readers, at least in part by providing them a valuable and worthy news vehicle on the day of the week which numerous studies show people have time to read a newspaper," Mike Pirtle, president/publisher of the Post, said.
Backing the new paper is a group of 10 area businessman interested in providing an independent editorial voice for the community which has experienced a consolidation of newspapers in recent years.
The Post will bring a new viewpoint and perspective to news and commentary in the Murfreesboro market, Pirtle said.
In addition to its distinctive Sunday printed product, the Post will produce an innovative online news medium which is introduced today. The web site, murfreesboropost.com, will be publishing breaking news and community events on a daily basis.
"We want the community to be involved in the Post's publications, both in print and online," Pirtle said, adding, "We want the community to submit its news, its upcoming events, its accomplishments and its opinions."
The Post web site will be interactive, allowing members of the community to comment on developments that affect or interest them.
"We earnestly solicit suggestions and ideas from the people of the community on what they would like to see in a newspaper dedicated to this community and encourage them to use our website to do so," Pirtle added.
The free distribution of the Post targets the audience served by the retail and service base centered in Murfreesboro providing blanket coverage of the market area. The bulk of the 45,000 distribution will be delivered to households on Sunday morning along with a large number of racks and business locations.
Pirtle is a veteran newsman who has served this market for the past 20 years and produced the most acclaimed non-metro daily newspaper in Tennessee for the last 10 years.
Distribution of the Post will be directed by Kim Council, a proven publishing veteran, who, among other duties, handled circulation for the Nashville City Paper for the first six years of its existence, overseeing delivery of 65,000 papers daily.
Anchoring a veteran news staff is Mike West, managing editor. West, a Murfreesboro native, twice won the Tennessee Press Association’s "Best Sunday Newspaper" contest, besting all of the state’s daily newspapers.
Joining West on the news staff are senior writer Lisa Marchesoni, business editor Erin Edgemon, sports editor Josh Ezzell and photographer Laura Leigh Smith. Together, the news staff has more than 50 years of journalism experience.
"It's a dream staff of dedicated journalists. All of them are extremely excited about the Post's potential and are already hard at work," West said.
