MySpace LayoutsFrench painter Gustave Moreau is considered to be one of the greatest of the Symbolists artists. In 1846 he attended the studio of François Picot at the Paris Beaux-Arts and was a good friend and sometimes pupil of Théodore Chassériau. In 1864 he had his first success at the Paris Salon with Oedipus and the Sphinx though later Moreau's exhibits would be heavily criticized. Gustave Moreau developed a strong disdain for the Salons and would not show again there until 1876 with Salome Dancing Before Herod. The painting was well received. In 1884, Moreau took a position teaching at the Beaux-Arts and gained a reputation as a quality instructor. His pupils included such artists as Marquet, Matisse, Camoin, and Rouault. Rouault later became the first curator of the Moreau Museum in Paris, which upon his death Moreau left to the nation. Gustave Moreau's subjects often were biblical and mythological scenes and famed temptresses in mystic settings.
